Wudtone question..

Hi all, I see nice body colour options from Wudtone.com, just wondering if the body colour could be used for the back of the neck as well?
i.e. Strat type guitar with ash body, maple neck and ebony fretboard? Obviously, masking off the fretboard?

Any thoughts guys?

Hi, I just finished a tele build using wudtone. Really great product, but it's a bit tricky on necks.

The dye based stains work ok on maple necks, but the pigmented colours aren't very compatible with maple. Also the top coat that comes with the wudtone (either clear or vintage tinted gloss or matte finish) I wouldn't recommend on a neck either, it's a bit too thin.

They do a separate neck finish that can be either tinted or clear that just paints on. It's nice and thick and self leveling so after 2 or 3 coats, I just left it to cure and it was smooth and shiny! If you use the body base colour coat on the neck, the neck finish can go over the top of this just fine.

Long story short, if you've got a clear wudtone colour, as opposed to a semi transparent or solid colour, it won't be super deep, but it will work on the neck.

I'm a noob here, so I don't know if I'm allowed to post links to other forums here, but check out pitbullguitars (dot) com (dot) au, and check out the forums there. They have a boatload of info on Wudtone and the Wudtone creator, Andy, even posts there sometimes. A dude named Dingobass is basically the master of wudtone there.

Sorry for the epic huge post. Hope it helps!

Josh.

Here are some quick pictures. Please excuse the quality, they're taken with a phone and I'm no photgraphic wiz.

You can see the grain come thorugh in the body, a semi-transparent finish, kinda like a Fender blonde, but more yellow. The true color is a kind of melted butter colour, perhaps a little less green than the pics show, but it's close to real life, especially in the second shot.

Second pic is a close so you can see where the top coat was still thick around the bottom edge of the body. I'm a total novice, but IMO the application process was easy enough and would be easier second time around. Just wipes on with a soft cloth.

Third pic is a close up of the back of the neck. Painted on with a soft brush. Super easy to do.

I'm new to forums, so hopefully the pic links work.

Cheers!
Josh.

Thanks for posting the photos Josh.

Josh, perhaps you are a genuine poster and happy Wudtone user but it does seem to question the impartiality of the review when you have no other posts at all.

I find it a little surprising that someone asks a question about a product and someone posts a first post, to answer in quite a bit of detail that question and then several days later posts a second post with photos.

I know it seems weird, but I promise I'm a real person! I'm just one of those weirdo lurker types, read a lot but never post. I'm pretty new to the whole DIY guitars thing so usually I don't take part in conversations as I've got nothing of value to add, but I figured this was one area I had a little experience in and just wanted to share.

Plus I only finished it a few weeks ago so I was excited to show it off! I promise I have no affiliation with wudtone! If you heard how terribly I play the guitar, you'd know I'm telling the truth.  :icon_biggrin:
