I have always wondered if it is possible to woodburn on the fretboard? I know it would leave indention's, but I would plan on filling those up to make it smooth (Not quite sure how yet). Would it be tonally bad for the fretboard?  Thanks in advance for response!

Let me be the first to welcome you to the forum!

You can find a great thread about wood-burning a guitar here:

If that won't work for you, search Tat Strat here. It's a great thread about a great project that I can't wait to see finished!

Thanks for the link! It is definitely going to be a big help! This is the rough drawing I did for what I want to do with my bass body when I buy it. Originally I wanted to just do a golden oak stain and a darker mahogany stain or something, but after doing some other staining projects, I know that the stain is horrible about bleeding into any little vein it can find, even with spray stain....So now I am leaning towards doing woodburning (which I have done before) and then doing a stain on top of that.

That is gonna be beautiful. Can't wait to see the in-progress shots.

There will be in-progress shots, right?

We love pictures here. The more the better!

Of course! I just need to sell of my Warmoth 7 String body, tremolo, and pickups before I can order this. ha!

Ok so now I am wondering if I want to do a dye on the guitar body instead of the wood burning. I searched for how exactly to do the dying, but I cant find specific instructions. Is there a link for how to dye on the forum?

I don't know... I've been around long enough to see some of the stuff that used to come out of Japan/Korea/Malaysia/wherever, and even some of the "vintage" American guitars, that weren't worth the matches to set 'em on fire.

Of course, things have changed dramatically. The advent of the CNC machine and a bit of serious competition has given us some really nice stuff these days. It's getting to be a lot tougher to get a pure garbage instrument. Even the low end stuff now is surprisingly good.
