Whoops I bought a body

Well I made out like a bandit today. This body had probably been in the showcase for a day at most, since I have been keeping a pretty close eye on the soloist section. Apparently the battery box is routed too close to the outline so the standard strap button position is compromised. I could care less, I play sitting down 99.8% of the time, so if I need strap buttons I will play something else.





I wouldn't have entertained the idea of getting it if it wasn't routed for a hardtail, but it was...

And it's close to my birthday...

And you know I never really have tried anything with a H-S-H set up...

This is a disease...


For a little fun take some guesses as to how much I paid for this body. If you actually saw it in the showcase don't ruin the fun, but seriously I feel like I practically stole it from Warmoth, I can't believe how much they took off for something that I can't imagine people would get that upset over.

'Certainly is a gorgeous piece of wood. Personally, I'd fill the battery cavity, and put a strap button in the standard location. Guitars shouldn't have batteries anyway.

I'd wager you could use a standard strap button without any issue. There's still a decent chunk of wood there, and the whole guitar probably isn't going to exceed 8lbs. The typical screw might be too long, but you can always cut/grind it down once you've run it in once so the hole is threaded. Then, install the battery box that's supposed to go there so it looks right and call it a love story. Never know - someday you may want a battery in there for something.

A lot of really cool people put two strap buttons on, equidistant* from each side of the centerline. The argument being you can set it on the floor leaning up against something and the buttons will dig in and protect against the wobblies. I think they just do it to be really cool though, how many stories have you heard with happy endings that started with guitars leaning on things?

I just "stole" this pup for... $125 too, I can see, maybe, the wood is joined a bit off the centerline?

Are you putting batteries in?

If you're putting in two batteries, then I say go with Cagey's suggestion. The amount of wood there looks fine to me, in fact it looks about the same amount as I went into my chambered Tele body for the front strap button before the drill went into a chamber, and I have no problems there.

If you're putting in one battery, I reckon you can either:
- glue a piece of wood in there and go into it with a regular screw, or
- go through the button and the wood with a machine screw and put a little bolt and washer on there

either of which will be strong.

Or if you're not putting batteries in at all, then yes you can just put a piece of wood in there and you're golden.

Either way, you got a total steal there, for a "problem" that's no problem at all.

Good score Stub, I have been thinking about a 7/8 guitar for a while now.

Like I said it has got a few too many holes in it for my liking, but who cares. I couldn't even get a solid mahogany body for twice as much as this one cost.

As for the strap button, I can't imagine I would ever use two batteries. I doubt I'll even use one. All the same I also never use strap buttons. So its a moot point for now.

Tom Anderson Guitars does that. Personally, I don't see the point. Neither button is in the optimum position for use of a strap. Guitar stands were invented so we wouldn't have to lean our guitars against anything. Put the button in the center and enjoy the guitar.

Yes.  What cagey said.  That is a dual case too.  There has been much debate of the benefit on the extra battery.  I see it un-necessary.

I think Srs. U. Down and J. Jumble both have the right idea - put in a battery box not for batteries, but for your opium, condoms, good-luck fetish charms/shrunken head, cyanide pill; but first drill all the way through it and bolt that strap button down. I have seen too many buttons pull out (always top ones though), but there's usually operator failure at the root - if you can't take 4 minutes 45 seconds every full moon to check that screws are tight, tuner bushings staying put, that wobbly jack is TIGHT again (mechanical movement kills electronics components) , you've got spare strings (same gauge new pack, a few single strings of perhaps corrective size) - all the right gauges in the case... well if you don't check once in a while, you fully deserve everything horrible that happens to you. Ever seen an electric guitarist tearing around a bar trying to find a .011".... it probably IS kinda funny if you're on the outside of the skull, it ain't pretty from the inside looking out.  :tard:

And it is on its way. I should have it when I am home for thanksgiving.

I ordered an EMG ZW set (not the ones with the crazy covers) for this guy. They were a random ebay find for like 50-70 dollars off depending on where you got them. I think there are still some up for grabs if anyone has wanted them.

I figured I would get some EMGs since I have been into that style of music lately and hey its got a big old battery box.

I am still floundering over the HSH setup...

Yeah that is what I am thinking, but I just am not sure I will ever feel the need to get one. Especially since the "wiring" of the EMGs will be so easy. I wont have the "I want to wire this once and be done with it" mentality when all I have to do is plug stuff in.

Incidentally I wouldn't bother with the 18V EMG mod if I were you. You just get through twice as many batteries and the difference is nothing special, and nothing you can't achieve by tweaking your amp a bit.

Haha that is very true...I will have to put getting one at the top of the list, before a neck so that it forces me to get one.

I hadn't thought about it really. I used to have EMG's in my SG and was going to try it once, but couldn't find enough space under by PG without routing for the 2nd battery. That was about as far as my ambition went.

I tried it by just having a battery hanging out of the guitar. Totally underwhelming. I suspect it's one of those things that internet forums groupthink themselves into thinking they're absolutely necessary and make a night-and-day difference to tone, like thin breathable finishes and expensive capacitors.

I think if it was me, I would make a custom cover for the battery cavity, that just screws on in the same way as a trem cover would, and then use a battery clip like this inside the cavity:

That then gives you space to put a machine screw, washer and nut for the strap button.
