Hi folks,

I'm getting involved in a Jazz bass project for a friend, but we want the whole bass to be very light and not neck dive.

Warmoth does not make light bass necks.  They are great necks, but they are not light.

Any opinions on who would and who would be good at it?

P.S. yes I'm going to use the hipshot ultralite tuners.

Check out soulmate guitars.  i think he'll make you anything you want so long as you're willing to wait. He is a very busy man.

I have worked with David King of KingBass, he does custom work and his stuff is very nice. He might be able to construct something for the project.

How much does it need to weigh?

I've only done a few basses and one Jbass neck upgrade so far, but near as I can tell there's not a lot of difference between a Warmoth maple Jbass neck with rosewood or ebony board and the weight of a std. Fender Jbass neck.

The neck weight (and diving) is relative to the body weight, believe me.  :laughing7:

+1 None of my friends understand me when I say that heavy bodies are better! If you get a body heavy enough you can get whatever neck you like!

Ah, so you can get a balanced bass with a super heavy body - yay. The point of the thread was to get a balanced bass in a very light package. And the W bass necks have steel stiffening rods down the center. Mine is the heaviest neck I've ever held.
Mayfly, what's wrong with a good old maple Fender neck? If you find something much lighter than that, I would wonder about the construction. I know that the 'other' custom guitar company in Puyallup makes a fender licensed neck with just the trad single truss rod.
BTW, I was out bass amp shopping last week and played the Aerodyne Jazz bass (Fender Japan, actually a PJ). It was very light and comfy yet still balanced.

Yep, I've been checking out the "other guy" - I didn't think he was a fender licensee though, since the headstocks on his necks are not quite fender shapes.

I'll probably just give him a call when the time comes.
