So for my project, when I earn the money (which is going to be hard for me 'cause i'm 13!), i want to make a FR LP with SD blackouts.
Before i started to get into this, which was only a few months ago, i recently found out how damn complex putting a guitar actually is!  :tard:

I know the main this is ordering the body and neck, in my case with finishes, i new that before i wanted to do this, but then Which wood. I know know!

Then all the electronics, the FR, the routing, nut width, the neck contours, fret wire size (undecided!), inlays, wiring, body shape( i used to think there was only one kind or LP,I stand corrected), etc,etc......... I knew nothing of that! But know i do, a bit.....

So, LP- mahogany with EDIT! Flamed maple (black/Red/yellow burst-Trans red back)with OFR    EDIT! Purpleheart/rosewood neck(No fretboard finish) with locking nut.
Thanks to those who help decide! :headbang1:

Wanna...

I am inspired by your determination and drive to earn money and build a guitar for yourself. I can't speak for others here but if you set up a paypay account I would be willing to donate a few dollars to help you get started. I still have my first guitar (Kramer Focus 2000) that I bought brand new after working for 2 summers with my dad when I was 13. It still looks like the day I bought...since I bought it I had more respect for it. In a day and age where so many kids think everything is owed to them and Brand loyalty is everything it is refreshing to see someone from your generation want to work hard and buy somthing non mainstream when the masses dictate Gibson or Fender is the way to go.

Set up a PayPal account and I will throw a few bucks your way.....for me there is not better gift then music and maybe we can all get you rockin faster then you think. In return you will have to document your build and post many pictures

Ken

Well your build sounds cool, wana, and if you treat it right you'll still be playing it on stage 40, 50, 60 years from now.  Also, watch the showcase CLOSELY for what you want... the prices on finished bodies are a bit better there.  Go with a neck you can play raw, too... they feel great and you'll save on the finishing.

Very cool idea Ken, someone of such gererosity is a rare find these days, I would gladly donate a custom neckplate for said project....

Doug,

Good Idea...I didn't even think about some of the spare parts I have laying around....would be cool to donate some parts as that might get him up and playing sooner.

Ken

I've got boxes of stuff, pickups, tuners ect, let us know what you're looking for
I'm sure I'm not the only one with "boxes". I'd be happy to send stuff you're way
if I've got anything you're looking for.

Woah, i didn't see that comin!

I'm greatfull for what you guys have offered, but i live in Australia, all but the paypal account stuff can be done, i've had a bad experience from air and boat mail i don't want any parts damaged.

But thanks.  :rock-on:

Wana....

I tell you what then. I will offer my PayPal account which right now is empty. I will put $20 US in it and shoot for a goal of $100. if anyone else wants to contribute just make a donation and report to this thread that you did so and how much so the whole form knows that I am not scamming anyone. When the account reaches $100 I will purchase a Warmoth GC and mail it to you.

www.paypal.com

PayPal is account is:
tiptonken@yahoo.com
make sure in the memo you put "warmoth" so I know where to allocate the funds. Would be cool if we as a community we can help you get rockin'

Don't know what it is about this kid but for some reason I want to help him.

Ken

This guitar, nowhat how awesome it is, is not really much use to me now cause i only know so much on guitar, but it'll be cool.

Thanks for the offers, i'll check with my parents about the neckplate, but i think i'll pass on the paypal money, not being rude or anything, but you earned the money, you keep it.  :icon_thumright:

I think I will help the kiddo by giving him pointers about the build.

1: fretsize: figure out what you like. do you like tall frets? small frets? choose accordingly.
2: neckdimensions: same thing. I like very, very fat necks, so I choose very fat necks. Pick up several les pauls and look what necksize you like.
3: I cant say if you like inlays. I like extravagant inlays, and I choose accordingly.
4: neckwidth: measure up the nut of your favorite neck and order that width. most common is 1 11/16 inch.
5: there is just 1 les paul bodyshape. but there is one with the carved top (like the original) and one with a flat top. I'd take the carved top any time of the week.
6: electronics: take a look on www.seymourduncan.com and look up schematics. it will give you a nice idea of what is possible and how it should be wired.

White dots on the side and Trapezoid on the frets

I reckon that'd do.

So will I :icon_thumright:

I already have, i've got a good idea of this and i reckon i can do it.

wow, cool :) you really have already an idea what you wanna have. what kind of 'fat'do you like? mind you, the boat and fatback shapes are REALLY fat!! if you have big hands, its cool. with smaller hands, it can be tricky, BUT: a fat neck can be reshaped to be smaller, whilst a small neck can't get more wood to be fat. so I suggest: if you like fat, take the fatback, and if its too big, take it to a local luthier and have a millimeter shaved off. thats my advice.

about pickups: think about the tone you want, about your musicstyles your favorite bands, your wallet (how much can and do you want to spend?), and choose. For a floyd rose-equiped guitar, I'd use a pickup that's warm, but with GREAT harmonics, like the rio grande BBQ, the seymour duncan JB, the bareknuckle miracle man, the BKP warpig, the BKP painkiller, the seymour duncan distortion, the seymour duncan custom, the dimarzio air noron, dimarzio EVO, dimarzio bluesbucker (strangely enough, yes :) this is a GREAT pickup for heavy metal and pinches), the dimarzio super3.

just some stuff to think about :)

Blackouts? Livewire?

I want actives because they look cool and have high output (not that i really know what that mean unless it just picks up more sound)

If i can't get an active pickup that can do black metal, death meta,l trash, blues, jazz, British rock, etc,etc......I'll go with the JB, full shred, dave m livewire or dimebuckers

Any suggestion for a really versatile SD pickup.

Actives are usually the "standard" choice for most high-gain/metal applications. And the Dave Mustaine Livewires ARE active. :icon_thumright:

Again, I'm surprised at the generosity here. Incredible!

Good luck on your build! I'm only 2 years your senior, and attempting my own guitar!
