Looks like dilute black stain on mahogany with a clearcoat.  You could do the same, and top with Tru-oil instead of lacquer or poly.

That's kinda what I thought.  Would it also make sense to just tint some clear and build the color until I'm happy, and then just use clear until the finish it thick enough?

Yeah, I agree with what has been said, a dilute stain seems most likely.  You could also lightly sand a darker stain back, or use a stronger solvent to wash it off a bit to get that more weathered stain look.
