this is a video of a high strength magnet passing through a copper ring. the reason it moves eerily slow is the resistance of the material to changes in the magnetic field. the moving field creates circulating currents in the metal ring that are basically shorted and need lots of energy to move. the effects of eddy currents goes up with frequency and thickness of the metal surrounding the field, the properties of the metal are also a big influence. thin pickup covers made from nickel (or better yet titanium) would have much less effect than thicker covers made from brass or aluminum. it's also something to think about with metal pickup rings, tele bridges, and strat pick guards. if you want that anodized brushed aluminum or diamond plate pickguard on a strat your pickup choice will need to be brighter than with a plastic pickguard, and you will also need any noisless pickups to be side by side not stacked since the aluminum will isolate the emi on each side of the pickguard from hitting the coil on the other side of the guard and negate the noise canceling effects, plus side is it will make true singles quieter.
it looks fake but anyone can try it, it works.
