Context: My band is currently drummerless. Our bass player's brother is selling a PDP kit (used, but not abused) for $400, and I'm considering buying it. It's not that I'm planning on dropping guitar to become our full-time drummer, but it would be nice to have a kit for practicing, recording, etc. I'm by no means great, but I've taken some lessons and have always been interested in learning and owning a kit.
Here's the rub. I have no place to keep or use a drum kit in my apartment, so it would have to stay in our practice space, which just happens to be our singer's basement. This means that I would have limited access to it for practicing (while he, who also has a certain interest in playing) would obviously have unlimited access. Do you guys think it's a worthy investment on my part because I want to learn and own my own kit, even if I won't get to play it all that often (at least for now), or should it be a band expense? I like the idea of owning it outright, because then it's clear what happens to it if one of us moves or the band breaks up or what have you. Or should I just not bother?
I realize this is very off-topic, even for this forum, but I've been thinking about it a lot for the last few weeks. $400 is by no means an exorbitant amount for a decent drum kit (and from what I've read this is an intermediate kit), but it's still 400 bucks, and I do have rent, student loans, etc. to pay.
So...any thoughts?
