Unfinished necks??

Warmoth seem to strongly advise a finished neck to maintain stability and that the warranty is void without a finish, yet so many of you on here seem to go for unfinished necks.

Subject to seeing a few Z body pics, my body is pretty much ready to order (VIP) and I'm now looking at what neck to use. It'll be a 24.75" Warmoth design headstock with stainless frets, but I can;t get to the bottom of what wood to use.

I'm gonna got for a dark cherry sunburst on the body similar to this.... with a quilt select top and a balck Korina main body, also in d.cherry s/burst.

Any thoughts on neck woods and the stability/warranty issue before I default into a birdseye maple in satin?

Well, there are several woods such as rosewood, wenge, canary, etc... That do not require finish and are still covered under warranty.  For that body, I would look for a padock or rosewood neck. Neither require a finish.

If you can handle a big neck, I'd say go Fatback contour. If not, 59 roundback is pretty good. More wood, more tone.

As far as the neck goes, for that body I'd say

Warmoth headstock shape, fatback or 59 roundback, wenge/wenge SS frets (the tiny vintage ones!) Some nice locking Schallers, a white corian nut. Either a compound radius or my favorite, a straight 14 inch.

I'm not a very good player and find the bigger frets easier to bend with. Can't of different neck widths as I've only played two guitars over the last 20 years - a Gibson Les Paul and  Jackson Dinky. The Jackson is too thin. What is the contour of a Les Paul Standard from 2000 as if I can match that, all would be good.

It's the actual wood I'm concerned with....? keep the suggestions coming.

It'll be a compound radius, but I still can;t decide between a Gotoh 510 or the Shrober...

Any thoughts?

Go with the '59 if you like the gibson.  It reminded me of an SG I played in College that was just one of those guitars.  I like the '59 and the Standard Thin.  The Standard Thin is very similar to a lot of Fenders out there.  As far as woods go, I am a Wenge fan first of all, and then I want to try a Goncalo or a Canary next.  The Canary is more of a maple look/sound without finish, and the Goncalo is more of a mahogany sound without finish.  I would probably go rosewood or ebony for the fretboard.  Just my personal taste though.  Still, the Wenge is just a fun fast wood to play.

Only Maple, Mahogany, Black Walnut, Black Korina, etc.  need finishes.
Almost all of the others are preferable to keep raw, and they feel so much better that way.
Ditch the Maple idea and get something raw. Personally, I'd put something brown on that body. Maybe Rosewood or Wenge.

Thanks for posting those links - I'd found all bar the ebay ones - as you say Google is your friend. Sadly, i was hoping to find a bigger selection but I guess it's not a popular shape. I think I've decided to go with thee VIP anyway.

I've had a look on the website and found a lovely select piece of Madagascan ebony for the fretboard which I'd hope would look good on a wenge neck?

They list some woods on their tone chart suitable for necks that do not appear on the drop down selection box on the builder - does this mean they are not currently available?

Ebony on wenge is very nice.

And if the builder doesn't show it, yes, that means it's probably not in stock.  Try calling them to get an idea of when they expect availability.  If this is your first order, I'd call anyway, rather than just doing it all via the web browser.  The guys at W. are very helpful and might think of things you had forgotten.

Peace

Usually. But, they answer the phones directly there - you're not going to get caught up in some automated answering system that eats up long-distance time or air minutes, so it's always worth it to call and find out if if the builder is up-to-date. It doesn't have to be an expensive call, is what I'm saying. Some things they say they won't do, they will, and some things that don't seem available are.

Cool.

I get free USA calls as part of my telephone package so calling them is not a problem - I spoke to them last week in fact - great service.

As I love figured woods, I was thinking that Ziricote might be a nice neck wood under an ebony fretboard, but as i said, not on the builder despite being shown as a good neck wood.

I'll call them when I order.

Any suggestions on nut material?

No Joey! we had this same discussion 2 months ago, when there were a bunch of afra necks in the showcase for only 162$.. I still wonder if that was an error.. either way, they were gone before I had a chance to get them..
