can I get some opinions on the merits of unfinished necks.. on a strat,,,50% funk chording and 50% traditional soloing(santana, beck etc)
one of the warmoth guys swears by them
thanx un advance

Hmm, I'm pretty sure that more than one of us here swears by them.
Just about everyone here who has tried a raw neck absolutely loves it.

Raw necks are the way to go. Its so much smoother than any finished neck I've ever played, virtually no drag. I went with canary and couldn't be happier. Rub your hand across a plain piece of paper, thats about how smooth it is.

I can't recall a single poster who has bought an exotic neck and hated the feel. Can anyone else? I have a wenge and two rosewood, next neck (it'll be a while) will be canary. Satin finished maple or mahogany makes a perfectly nice neck but given the choice I'd take exotic.

I have 2 warmoths. one with a satin finished maple neck and the other with a raw wenge. I really like both so much that I couldnt pick just one. but if I had to I would go with the exotic wood option simply cause its something you are not goin to find at Guitar Center. unfinished exotic necks are just classy as hell!

I have  canary and  goncalo 59 roundbacks on 2 of my guitars.  When I got them I liked the raw so much I stripped the factory necks on my strat and les paul and resealed them with a few light coats of tru-oil.  I wouldn't have anything different now.

I've had bubinga/ebony, bubinga/bubinga, bloodwood/bloodwood, bloodwood/maple, and rosewood/maple (all bass necks, mind you), with many more to try.  There's something about each that emotes favorable comment.  I finished the maple necks with 4-7 applications of satin spar urethane finish by Minwax, and steel wooled to taste.  It's ALL good in my book, and I'd be hard pressed to pick just one favorite.  Maple does have it's merits.  Warmoth is an adults candy store, and I plan to keep sampling their inventory as long as I'm on the right side of the green  :icon_biggrin:
