Turning a glossy neck into a non-glossy neck: is it possible?

I hate glossy necks.  Period.  However, some of my favorite instruments (ie. Fender vintage J-basses) all have glossy necks.

I'm sure I could get used to playing a glossy neck, and this isn't even really a "warmoth-related" question, but has anybody ever refinished or reworked a glossy neck to give it a more raw or satin feel?  How can this be done safely and without damaging the instrument?  (given that I am a complete amateur and noob when it comes to proper wood working and finishing...)

Thanks for your input!  :headbang1:

0000 steel wool?  Very fine scotchbright pad?  I still use the steel wool, though I'll probably switch to the scotchbright pads as they don't shed metal slivers.

cool thanks!  does that just soften the finish, or render it useless for protecting the wood too?  I'm talking about doing it to a $1500 instrument so I definately want to protect the wood

It just knocks some of the gloss off.  If you play hard enough, it will shine back up in time.  Just hit it again.

With 0000 steel wool (or its nylon synthetic equivalent) it would take you a long time to sand through the finish.  You're just scuffing the surface, no worries there.

I also recommend rubbing on some poly satin topcoat when ur done removing finish... that stuff rocks. If your gonna do any finish on a neck (hopefully not) do satin.
