I have heard that the OFR with a big brass block from floydupgrades.com or whatever can sometimes even have more sustain than a hardtail... but I'm with dmraco on prefering hardtails over anything else...
Quality hardtail all the way. Otherwise get a big steel trem block from Callaham or one of the others and put it on whatever you want - you need high mass down there. And no floating! Should be dive-only.
It looks like you have decided to go with a whammy. I would go with a locking unit if you really plan on using it alot. Floyd of Kahler.
check this guy out...he does a series of vids comparing the two. I think the slight edge may go to a floyd. I personally like the kahler better and have not seen the pitch issue if the string are installed correctly. Go to a local store and play both. Kahler is back and there units are on several guitars...plus they now have a locking pin to make it a hardtail...so to speak....

well the thing is, i'm not much of a metal player. my tremolo use is rather light but something i definately want to have.
i'm just into those long sustaining blues notes, or the kind of sustain santana's got going.
essentially i like the sustain of a hardtail and the versatility of a tremolo.
i guess a wilkinson with a steel block would be my best bet.
+1 to the wilkinson. It's my fave non floyd trem.
Very smooth feel, In my experience it doesn't add sustain, but it's a better trem than the regular strat design.
Also, there is Callaham, which is cool. I like the 2 point design of the wilki though.
