The dust hasn't even settled on my Iceman bass project and a Showcase neck I couldn't pass up spun me into this project.  I haven't even ordered the pickups, tuners, bridge, or talked about a Dangerous Plate yet.  The neck was good deal, so I had to get a body for it.

Neck:
-Plain maple shaft/rosewood fingerboard
-White binding
-Pearloid block inlays
-Reverse headstock (of course)
-14mm tuner ream for 3/8" Hipshot Ultralites
-Clear Satin Nitro finish

Body:
-Alder
-Candy Turquoise finish
-Split P and MM pickup routes
-Bad Ass III (Fender American Standard) string thru bridge route
-Red Pearl pickguard, though that may change.  Mrs. STDC don't like it.

This thing arrived after sundown, so I'll get some shots when the sun is out tomorrow.

There is no sidejack option for a top routed P-Bass.  I ordered an electrosocket jack and was considering drilling the 7/8" side jack hole myself and having the controls holes be V-V-T, but have since changed my mind.  If putting a pot where the jack would be on the last hole of the pickguard, it would have to be a skinny one.  I think I'll do it V-T-Jack and 2 mini toggles between the tone knob and jack.  One as a pickup selector and the other as a series/parallel for the MM bridge pickup.

That neck and turquoise look sweet in the sun!

FWIW, when I got my '72 P body, the side jack was a "you have to ask for it" option.

With the exception of this showcase neck and the Buck Owens showcase Tele body, all my orders are phone orders.  I did ask about the side jack.  Then again, through no fault of their own, with all the custom orders/options, sometimes it depends who you ask or how hard you press for off the menu items.  With your 72, I think the edge radius may be different and the control locations have more space between where the cable and pots end up being.  There's potential for a collision on this one.  Also, on the Fender Deluxe models, they have 4 knobs and a side jack, so I know it can be done.  Like I mentioned earlier, with the stock locations, a standard width CTS pot can't fit where the jack is.

Funny thing about the neck, it's a showcase piece that was listed as a gloss finish.  It just needed fretting and a nut.  After 2 weeks, no quantum view email, I called.  Long story short, it was configured but never bought, so it didn't have a finish.  I was able to get a clean satin nitro on it instead, which is what I wanted.

I'm still riding the fence on the pickguard color.  Mrs. STDC likes Tortoise or black.  I think either would be nice.  With that color body and a black guard, Steve Harris vibe?  I've seen Lake Placid Blue J-Basses with Tortoise guards that looked nice.  I meant to request a truss trench route on the pickguard too.  Not excited about controls mounted to a pickguard and pickguard and string removal for neck adjustments.  :dontknow:

I think my '72 body is identical to my standard Fender P-bass dimensions, but the bottom control location on a '72 is indeed further from the edge, so it may be for that reason - particularly if you wanted a recessed jack. A side jack would definitely have to located where the controls weren't going to be on yours, whereas on my '72 the (non-recessed) jack points directly at the tone pot but there's still enough room.

But it was still a "have to ask" thing for mine regardless, so I always try to make sure to let people know they can at least ask for stuff.

As for the PG, I'm not sure about the red either. Maybe play around in the strat builder? And if you're going for a new PG anyway, why not just add another control hole to it?

I like to see the wood grain in the bodies but Wow! that Candy Turquoise looks very good!

Normally I'm the same way.  This is body number 6.  The other 5 are dyed or transparent finished.  It's my first Alder body as well, and that was based solely on the knowledge it was going to be a solid finish. Not that Alder is ugly or can't take a transparent finish, it's just less of a crime than covering a nice piece of BK or ash.

Playing with finishes and pickguard colors on the Strat builder is exactly what I did.  I was actually considering doing a Turquoise flake finish with the red pearl pickguard.  I was even going to go so far as to get a "Skeeter" bass boat decal for the headstock, lol.

If I got a pickguard with an extra control hole, or drilled it myself, I'd have to route the body to accept it, which I'm not above doing.
