The 80s are back in a big bad way.

I'm not sure how it is in America, but here there are three music groups.
1) Heavy, Death, Grindcore, Black, Norwegian metal
2) 80's metal, classic rock
3) Commercial (anything on the radio that is catchy)

I am a member of group 1 and 2.

For me, I hope the 80's are back

yeah, the last three guitars I've bought have had a distinct 80's (albeit built in the 90's  ) flavour...

'94 Ibanez PGM500CA
'91 Charvel Fusion
'94 Ibanez IC500 Iceman

Need to buy my first Warmoths; I'm thinking a Paul Gilbert-style (painted f-holes) Tele with floyd, and a firebird with EMGS

Still savin'......

I was watching bits and pieces of the US festival (83?) and thought to myself that they could never  re-create something like that..
the majority of "today's youth" (writing that makes me feel so old) is so way different now than back then
and it would probably attract more old farts by now...

(not sure what  the point of this post is  :sad1:)

I was mostly talking about the new tron movie.  Maybe I just dated myself.
The trailer looked cool, I'm just shocked that the light cycles couldn't do a 90 degree turn at full speed.

Couldn't agree more.  That defeats the entire purpose of the light cycles.  And surprisingly, the costumes actually look worse than in the original.  That usually doesn't happen.

Spend your $ on actual new stories like Peter Jackson's upcoming 'district 9' not some 80s retreads. I'm from the 80s (class of 89) and I'm telling you it was a pretty lame decade that I have no desire to relive. Jeff Bridges in a Tron outfit in 2009? Ack.

I had completely missed this one! Thanks! :)

And yeah, a new Tron? Why?

District 9 looks cool, There's actually a short film on youtube somewhere that it's based on, and I don't believe Peter Jackson is actually a part of it, I could be wrong but I think its one of those "Quentin Tarantino presents: " kind of things. Makes me think of 'V' which apparently they're doing a reboot of.  Which is a shame.  Tron might have the ability to be relevant today because of the subject matter.  Things that made V so relevant at its time was that WWII wasn't quite so distant as it is today and everyone was feeling the cold war back then. I dont know how they're going to make something out of it for today's audience except for maybe a sense of nostalgia, which does not make it relevant.

Funny, even though I was 12 when TRON came out, I never saw it.  Loved the arcade game, but my parents never took me to see, and wouldn't!  As I lost all interest in video games a few year later (I discovered guitar), I never bothered to see TRON.  I keep meaning to.  I'll probably Netflix it and take my kids to see the new one.

And they '80s?  My band, as much as we'd like to cover stuff equally from the '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, and today, its the stuff from the '80s that seem to get the best reactions from crowds.  "Love Shack", "I Melt with You", "Don't You Want Me, Baby?", "Should I Stay or Should I Go?", "Keep Your Hands to Yourself", "Just Like Heaven", etc. all get people dancing.  Heck, the Bowling for Soup song "1985", an homage to the '80s, gets good reactions (and makes my kids laugh, they insist the song suits us perfectly).

Heck, my 14 year old stepson and all his friends LOVE Journey.  WTF is up with that?!?!?!?!?

Its funny how everybody always dumps on the '80's.  I thought it was a great decade, with some great bands and great songs.  The birth of music video paved the way for some serious fluff ... but that hasn't changed to this day, where there are still several artists who have been signed more for thier looks than thier talent.

Yes, there were more than a few fashion faux-pas ... but every decade has those.  The 60's had bell-bottoms, the 70's had SUPER-wide collers (worn on the outside of a blazer), and the 90's had those stupid crotch-by-your-knees pants.

And personally, I'll take a girl with crimped or feathered hair, tight jeans, and a neon-pink top over one with 6 facial piercings any day!

But that's just me .....
