So I've never played a guitar with this pickup configuration (or seen many at all), but I'm fond of single coils in the neck position and I couldn't give up having a humbucker in the bridge for distorted tones. Aesthetically I don't like the look of SSH at all, and I haven't had enough experience playing with a strat to know the advantages of having that middle position.
I'm leaning towards a tele, and i can think of at least one awesome guitarist who's got that setup.

I'll probably put a bright, low-output humbucker in the bridge and wire it up so the center position combines neck with one coil from the humbucker. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience w/ this arrangement. Do you feel like there are some sounds you can't get that want from an extra pickup? Or should I just stop asking questions and go find a strat to play for a couple hours. i don't know anybody in my area and the local guitar shops stock virtually nothing worth looking at, or i'd have done that already.

thoughts, commentary, photos. all are welcome. :)

I'm pretty sure that's a telecaster Plus. They use Lace sensors.
Single coil/humbucker is nice. I have the opposite configuration of that tele in my warmoth. It works well. And I'm sure the opposite will too.

he does use lace sensors. is there a model that comes standard like that? from what i'd read about him, he and his guitar tech have customized all of his guitars over the years, so i didn't really know if that was just modded from a standard or what

Imagine this without (or with!) the middle pickup - how does that not kick a Fender's booty any day?

That picture looks like a standard Telecaster Plus.

i would say you're probably right.

and for the blue tele - you know i actually fell in love with trans blue quilt top tele when i was a teenager. i think it may even have been a set neck. i just liked how it looked anyway. matching headstock and all.
is that one of yours? the pickup routes don't look so unappealing w/o a pickguard after all. AHHH. DECISIONS!@#!$

Incidentlly, I just sold my Tele Plus recently to a big Radiohead fan.

For those who are interested, this guitar has a Lace Sensor Blue at the neck and twin Lace Sensor Reds at the bridge.  The Blue Sensor actually replicates a PAF type of tone and the Red Sensor replicates a hot humbucker tone on its own.  The Dually Reds can be split, or joined for various tone changes and combinations with the neck pickup.

i'd like to get my hands on one of those just to play around with it a bit. was the center position a split coil or some other alternate setup or just the standard both on?

If you mean the Tele Plus, the switching system is quite versatile.

It has a 3 way mini toggle switch between volume and tone controls which assign which of the bridge Dually Lace Sensor coils to be on.  So in position 1, just the front coil of the Dually is on.  In position 2, both Dually coils are on (in series I presume).  In position 3, the rear coil of the Dually is on.

Each of these Dually positions can be mixed with the neck pickup with the usual Tele 3 way blade switch.

that sounds pretty cool. do the different coils in the dually really sound any different? I've got some experimenting to do w/ electronics before i make any decisions. I think i'll build the guitar b4 i buy the pickups and then see how it sounds naturally and go from there. If it's not too bright, i may go w/ a real bright humbucker in the bridge or something hotter in parallel mode. i loved the Air Norton in parallel in my old carvin... so many choices though.
