stupid question

4 and 5 string Jazz bass pickups aren't the same size right?  Also, I'm having trouble finding a pickguard for my 5 string jazz bass.

4 string bridge= 3 3/4"
5 string neck= 4"
5 string bridge= 4 1/8"

pickups - yea, they are different sizes.  they have a different number of polepieces as well.

Pickguard - try the pickguardian.  With a tracing they can make anything you like.  There is at least one other pickguard shop out there as well - name escapes me at the moment....

this ought to resolve any questions about pickup sizing

notice in the upper left corner that there are several different size covers for the 5-string J-bass bridge pickup. if you're replacing pickups on an existing bass, you need to do your measuring homework before ordering since many manufacturers use different configuration - Fender being amongst the worst. Also, a few manufacturers utilize the same sized cover (bridge) for bother of the pickups, but the coil size, pole piece spacing, and number of windings are different for each pickup
