Stupid boom-boom Wrecked National holiday in Netherlands

Yesterday, april 30th, was our national holiday. The entire country celebrates the birthday of the Queen. This has been a tradition for 100 years, and will be continued for the next 100 years, at least! Anyone who's been to the Netherlands around this time might recall millions of people, literally, dressed in the national color: orange! (the last name of the Queen is 'orange', because one of her ancestors had a piece of land, the land of orange, hence her name). The queen went to see a parade of veterans and other people who wanted to celebrate this national day of just puur, good fun. It was a sunny day, it promised to be a good one. Until...

A sick, lame, twisted man jumped in his car, drove through the parade, intending on crashing in the queen's bus. In the mean time, he hit 22 people if I remember correctly, crashing in a memorial statue for war victims! He killed 5 people, though the royal family was uninjured. It was intentional. Why in hell would someone deliberatly want to destroy the fun of 16 million people? I saw the queen making a statement. She was almost in tears, the poor woman. Even when her parents and husband died, within 2 years, she wasn't so upset as yesterday. almost 100000 people stood on the sideline, watching this horrific act of terror. Not terrorism, just terror. Intentionally hurting people, for no good reason. Unfortunatelly, the bastard died, so there was no way of interrogating him, something I seriously regret. Its unbelievable, but true.

Everywhere I go, the flags are semi-raised, to honour the dead. All the festivities were cut short out of respect for the queen and the dead.

And the  'sadest' part of it all? Even the muslim-society here, the ones who are the occasional thorn in the side to the 'white' population here, despise this act. If the culprit was one of them, the rest of the country would have a scapegoat, but now we can only look at ourselves; a thing which noone likes to do, or which is easy to do. This monday, we will memorate the dead; people who died a death invain. Never has that day been preluded by a day like yesterday.

Just needed a spot to place my ideas and feelings about yesterday...

I just saw this on the news. I don't live in the Netherlands, but I agree it's confusing, infuriating and saddening when you see people just want to terrorize stuff for no reason.

I don't think the guy is dead though, I think they said on the news that he was brain dead but on life support.

no, he really is dead :) Passed away at almost 3 am in the morning here. just read it on the dutch news.

Over here we have school shootings - and broadcast journalists lazy enough and greedy enough to keep hammering away on the stories for days and weeks, emphasizing the latest body count as though it's a new video game record to be beaten by the next shooter. Oh, and some wacky shooter-wannabees looking at the latest "record" thinking "hmmmm...." It's an easy story to "write" - you just take out "Columbine", insert "Virginia Tech" & change the dates & numbers - but attention and leaving your mark are all that matters to these guys - god forbid they should study science (that's work) and invent something useful or something. Without the media attention, these things would dwindle 90% - ask any terrorist - "Why?"

Sad when a day of happiness is mutated into one of mourning and anger.

On a distantly related note, I looked up the current Queen (Beatrix), and found out it was her grandmother, Wilhelmina, that was in power during WWII.  My grandfather, a major (then captain) in the US Army, received the Bronze Star and I believe possibly a decoration or two from a European nation (assumedly Holland) for escorting the Queen of the Netherlands across the English Channel.  I could be remembering the story wrong, but such is what I recall.

A good friend of me went last year to Netherlands after I and other friend said innumeral times Amsterdam kick major asses, and the day he came back was the day before the Queen's Day.... He got really impressed with the preparativeses for the party and went this year back again!! I'm really sad I had no money to go there (it's really expensive to people here travel abroad, our currency is lame³), the things he said really got my attention :)

I got really pissed off when I read the papers about this jerk of the car, first I thought it should be a really drunk idiot, now they're saying it was intented... hope everybody step hardly in his coffin....
My feelings are with the dutch people!

that might be correct :)  Wilhelmina was during WW2 in London. but: she was there from very early in the war, 1940, and the USA didn't get mingled in the war until pearl harbor....(and she was on an english boat....).

its a foolish attempt, and his act will change queens day forever, at least for the following decade. the 2000's have started lousy for the Netherlands. Problem after problem, mostly foreign, but too many internal. Why kill the only politician who could've made a change? well, I'll tell you; because he didn't explicidly say he was against FURR! freakin FURR!!!!! thats why he got shot in the head by environmentalists. just an example. its bullshit.

True...my assumption is it was a return journey, not the evacuation.  Maybe at this point, in 1945:

"Prior to the end of the war, in mid-March 1945, she travelled to the Allied occupied areas of the south of the Netherlands visiting the region of Walcheren and the city of Eindhoven where she received a rapturous welcome from the local population."

could be it, absolutely :)

It's just plain annoying whenever there's an incident like this.

The end result will be a tightening of security on the Royal Family, and this will further frustrate those who simply wish to greet them.

This century has been a dog for security incidences and terrorism to date, and most folks are just sick and tired or some nutter ruining things for everyone else.

I take it in Holland that the Royal Family is basically a Constitutional Monarchy with no real influence on Govt. policy or the way things are run in Holland? If so, why target them for anything?

As an interesting side note, the ties between the Netherlands and Australia has been getting closer in recent years!

Our National Football Team (Socceroos) got into the last FIFA World Cup Finals in 2006 (for only the second time ever) thanx to some great managing by Guus Hiddink (Aussie Guus to us) and now we are on the verge of qualifying for South Africa 2010, thanx to some solid managing by Pim Verbeek. Our Football Coaching curriculum has been overhauled by Rob Baan, and quite frankly, Football supporters in Australia are very thankful for the Total Football approach taken by the Netherlands and their coaching prowess. There's even been some cheeky suggestions that we shopuld add some orange to the National team jersey colours, such has been the Dutch influence.  :laughing8: :eek:ccasion14:

BTW, is it correct to use both The Netherlands and Holland in the same context and is it the same meaning? :icon_scratch:

technically, Holland is just 2 of the 12 provinces in the Netherlands. but it's ok to use both Holland and the Netherlands in the same context..

I saw this in the news, Orpheo.  Agreed that it is sad.  There are nut cases everywhere, and this is consistent.  My condolences to you and your fellow countrymen.

Anybody know why he did it?  Is it some sort of anti-royalty thing?  Or was he just a nut who felt he was being delayed by a ridiculous parade?

Nobody really knows.
seems it's a regular guy who just snapped.
recently laid off, evicted from his apartment, all that kind of stuff.

I don't know..call me sick, but theres something antidisestablishmentterrianism about that appeals to me. I dont like Queens. Okay, I get that they are mostly figureheads these days anyhow, but they represent an opulism that needs to be (*IN-mho) eradicated.
Look, this incident is NOT isolated- its an outcropping of the sickness of society exhibtited by the grotesue standards of a Capaitalistic Economy  that belittles everyone here. We all wotk as hard as Will Smith for instance, yet he made 80 million last year. Now granted,he may be a fine actor, but is his value to society worth 80 million dollars for one year? No. Most of us  honest hardworking folks give back equally to society interms of what we draw from it . My friends, you people , and I'm afraid its most of you, who hold the outmoded and degrading sysytem of unbridled  obscene wealth  that is the modern system of Society as some kind of sacred cow may continue to complain about these eruptions if insanity, but they will continue, and they will escalate. Dont blame this poor pig for killing peple- its the system that made him, and the system that will keep makeing poeple like him untill we can change it. Will it ever change? Sadly, no, mostly because of the ingrained vehemnece exhibited by you twards   anything even remotely resembling anything that runs counter to the ingrained philosophy of the beugoius thats been drilled into you from birth... but that wont change ny opinion about it

So, antidiestablishmentarianism you say?

an⋅ti⋅dis⋅es⋅tab⋅lish⋅men⋅tar⋅i⋅an⋅ism
   /ˌæntiˌdɪsəˌstæblɪʃmənˈtɛəriəˌnɪzəm, ˌæntaɪ-/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [an-tee-dis-uh-stab-lish-muhn-tair-ee-uh-niz-uhm, an-tahy-] Show IPA
–noun
opposition to the withdrawal of state support or recognition from an established church, esp. the Anglican Church in 19th-century England.

CHURCH FTW!!! :headbang1:

Wait... that doesn't fit...

OK, so it means that you're against the removal of state support for a particular religion?  Interesting.

While it is certainly ridiculous in a sense that Will Smith makes 80 million a year just for acting, the last thing we want to do is get the gov't involved and have it tell us how much we can or cannot make.  Hello... socialism?  (Hello, Obama)

And what if you had acting talent and you got a big break like Smith did?  Would you want the gov't telling you you can't make "x" $$$ ???

That's BS.

Free market, baby.  The sky is the limit.  That's why we're the best.  If we put limits on our potential or how much we make, then the will to succeed will wither and die, and the rest of the nation along with it.  People want the freedom to choose and the freedom to earn.  Let the Europeans keep experimenting with Socialism; they still haven't figured out it doesn't work.

I don't know, it seems there should be a middle ground.  Obviously, the pedal to the metal of the past 8 years (or more) has brought us disaster.  On the other hand you want people to have insentives to work.  It's a conundrum.  I have to say though, most people in the northeast and around the great lakes have had enough and want to try something else.

People also need to be very careful with what they wish for.
