I didn't really get that video. Evidently its a ceremony of cultural importance to the spectators, but to me it just looked like some silly Michael Jackson choreography. Can't fault those guys for giving it their all though. Best I can tell its the local equivalent of a "Wake Me Up Before You Go, Go" video.
Pakistan & India are fierce rivals.
From what I understand, this is a border crossing that is closed at evenings and opened in the morning.
Due to the rivalries between the two armies, they really ramp up the ceremony of the opening and closing of the gates, trying to outdo one another.
People have died in the past trying to get from one side to the other at this crossing, battles have been fought,it is very much a hotspot in Central Asia. This is why there is so much emotion attached to the ceremony and why there's a crowd there. There is still considerable tension at this crossing. With both Pakistan & India having huge armies, lots of bad blood between them & both now admitting to nuclear armaments programs, this could be the spark point that sets it all off.
Because of injuries in both squads, due to frenetic marching, both squads have toned it down a bit in recent years & tried not to be too aggressive to the other side.
I'd just love it, if
one day - while these guys are stomping and flailing their legs and arms around in aggressive gestures - if a little 60+ year old guy would just wander up to the gate, ciggy in his mouth and close it!
