Does anyone here have any experience with the Steinberger ZT3?

It looks great, priced reasonably & I'm always wanted a trans-trem.

Back when I was a wee sprig of a lad, in my early years of playing the guitar, I had a hankering for a trans-trem myself.  Back in the heady days of the first Van Hagar record, I thought Ed's playing on "Summer Nights" was something I'd love to be able to cop - and it requires a trans-trem to play the song in real time.  I still think it'd be a lot of fun, but I'm far less excited by the prospect of note-for-note VH covers.  If you pull the trigger, I'd be interested in your impressions.

If that plays and sounds as nice as it looks you probably can't go wrong

I know I could Google it, and I should probably already know, but whats a trans trem? hows it diferent from anything else?

Its a Bridge that's on the second of 3 very painful surgeries that will make it legally a Hardtail.

I think I will go for it. I found a used one for $1,200 & it's in new condition & the more I read up about it, the better it sounds. I've wanted a trans-trem for sooooooo long.

ok, I think I get the jist, just don't know how it works, but I'll find out. looks awesome

Had a trans trem years ago.
Never really bonded with it.

It's like a Kahler that stays in tune through out its range.

I would suggest trying it out first.

The vibrato unit looks great at seems to perform well, too bad it's headless - I've never understood the point of that. It would make open chords ridiculously uncomfortable for me. I'd be very interested to hear your comments when you get it DB :)

Why?  :icon_scratch:

I used to have this MusicYo Steinberger ... and open chords sounds and feels the same as on standard heads.

No headstock to rest the thumb against. It would have to be semi-wrapped around the butt end of the neck (the string retainer part) or up toward the edge of the fretboard, which would make the grip very weak or severely twist the wrist in an undesirable way, respectively.

But maybe the end bit is big enough to work anyway? I'm just going by interwebz images here :)

I'm sure it would be odd to not have a headstock at 1st, but like anything, with time, you'll get used to it.

I mainly want the Steinberger for the trans-trem. To get them by themselves costs $1000. I figure that I can get one, plus a guitar, for an extra $200.

I can't remember it being a problem. I remember that visually it felt like playing "over the edge" but that took 10 minutes to adjust to.

I would love to try the trans trem.

Cool, pretty much what I thought really. And I would too!

That is a good deal, they seem like well built guitars to me :icon_thumright:

I liked the M series, but that body doesn't seem quite as nicely shaped. Ya know I never knew Summer Nights was a transtrem, hadn't really given it much thought, but going back and listening to it today - yeah its pretty obvious if you're looking for it.

I don't care for the builder of this, but I always kinda liked it, even tho I've never liked Steinberger type guitars...go figure... :dontknow:

The original Steinbergers are the best, before Ned sold the company to Gibson. Then the quality went down & they stopped making them all together. The newer versions aren't anything like the original ones, but since a used one goes for 3-4k, it's out of my comfort range.

The ZT3 seems like a decent guitar, but if it wasn't for the trans-trem, I wouldn't be interested & would spend the money on another Warmoth build.
