I'm thinking of building a Short Scale (SSB) G4 bass and using the 2x2 Warmoth headstock neck. Can anyone describe the neck size/shape/profile? I'm trying to get the bass closed to what would be a short scale version of an Ibanez Soundgear (SR)? As you know those necks are super skinny and easy to play...how does the SSB contour compare to an Ibanez Soundgear neck?
Also, if the SSB has a bigger profile than an SR, is it feasible to take off some wood from the back of the neck? (I'd be buying an unfinished neck and finishing it myself) I emailed Warmoth tech support and the official answer is "we don't recommend reshaping necks" which I totally get, but I'm wondering if it's possible if you're careful? For instance how much wood is there between the outside of the neck and the truss rod? Would taking any wood off destabilize the neck? (I'm hoping the lower tension of a short scale might help me here)
Has anyone ever tried it?
