Squier Super Sonic style bodies

I really like the look of the old Squier super sonics from the 90s, but it's pretty hard to find the originals now and nobody seems to make replacement bodies. I used to have one, but I regrettably sold it a few years ago. I'd like to build a new one for myself, but I don't have access to any of the equipment needed to make a body from scratch, so it would be cool if warmoth offered it as an option.

The Super Sonic looks to be kind of a left-handed Jazzmaster shape with right hand controls. You could order a body with only neck pocket and pickup routs. Then run down to Harbor Freight and buy one of their cheepo routers and it should get you through routing the contol cavities. Then you could fashion a pickguard from pickguard material with files and a Dremel if you have access to one. The control plate could be from a Mustang to get you really close.

Then you would have the fun of making your own, exactly the way you want it. :icon_thumright:

I like this suggestion a lot.

But ...

The Super Sonic looks a bit like a reversed Jazzmaster/Jaguar but there’s actually much that differs between them. The SS body is smaller for one thing.
Here I’ve placed my Jaguar next to my Fender Super Sonic (the Fender SS has minor changes to the Squier SS).

An important detail that makes me doubt that Warmoth will ever do such a body is the neckpocket. The SS uses a special type where the neck actually attaches partly under the pickguard. Plus it has neck screw holes that’s completely different from those on Strat and Tele bodies.

Here’s some pictures of the neck-body joint on my SS.

But perhaps Warmoth could make a Super Sonic inspired body? Something similar but something that would allow them to use their ordinary Mustang necks without modification. With better higher fret access while they’re at it :icon_jokercolor:
That would be very cool.

I was surprised at the amount of difference between the SS and the Jag. I expected them to be different but not so much. Thanks for that photo.

That definitely sounds like the best approach. It would need a conventional neck pocket to be practical for a replacement body.
