I took a look at Giri...

Who managed to register, get on, and leave three messages within three minutes.  In fact, three messages posted within seconds of each other.

How about, some speed controls - I know they're available for this software package.

Something like... one post per minute.  That wouldn't slow down humans, but bots would find it annoying.  Same thing with registration-to-live timing.  A reasonable time-out, say 5 or 10 minutes from the time of actual registration, would play hell on bots.

Just a thought.

Just a timer so you have to wait 30 seconds between posts works pretty well, I've been on some boards using that since the late 90's.

Done.  Added a delay to new posts.  That should not impact the average human being.

It is interesting to note the most recent issues have been from wildly different subnets and outside of those typically associated with spam.  They're always getting smarter.....

Now I'm in the mood for some spam musabi.  Hawaiian deli, here I come!

TalkBass usually has a pretty good system.
30 seconds between posts. (Never had any problem with this.)
10 seconds between searches, IIRC off hand.
5 incorrect login attempts blocks your IP address from logging in for 15 minutes.

Wait, what Hawaiian deli?

Just north of the old Safeway on Meridian.  Little stripmall by the Chinese place.  Get me a loco moco if you go.  Sometimes they got haupia and poi on the weekends.

Marko and I are at work on the same IP you slaaaaaaaaaaaaags!!

I won't make the obvious joke that the name of this thread is SPAM insight, and we work for Insight.. and we're on their IP, and both can't post now unless there is massive delays, and if we try to post and it's too early it resets the counter.. ha!  :laughing7:

Okay, I don't like it now.
Especially the fact that you have to remake the message, instead of just being able to wait, then submit again.

I received the following message:

The last posting from your IP was less than 120 seconds ago. Please try again later.

I assure you that I am a most average human being.  You are not going to please everyone no matter what you implement here.

I have to say that I really don't see spam posts as a big issue.  I read the site everyday since joining and can only remember a handful of bot posts and true spam.

Um, we get spammed at least once a week now. How could you miss that?

Either way, any amount of spam at all is unacceptable.

I only get robbed like once or twice a year, do I really need to put a lock on my door?...

I didn't miss it - being spammed once a week or so doesn't seem like a big deal to me.  I get tons of spam in my email and I just deal with it.  I wouldn't accept any restrictions on use of my email account (e.g. only one email sent per 2 minutes or whatever) just to ensure that I never get any spam.  I know my example doesn't equivocate with what's going on here but the point is the same.  A spam post once or twice a week just doesn't seem that bad - I guess it's all relative to me.

If most people feel like you do, that no amount of spam on the message forum is acceptable, then I'm down with whatever system that gets put in place.  If it makes the admin's job easier, do whatver needs to be done.  I was just under the impression that we had it under control since it is a relatively infrequent problem.  Spam comes in, we report it, admins make the message go away.

This is part of being an admin, but any way to decrease the amount of this is a good thing IMO.

Are you still receiving this error or is anyone else experiencing problems posting?
