Something a bit different...my "first" University Project. Making a crane.

It's not as fun as it sounds though...

The major aim of the project is to move a 500g "statue" from one corner of a board to the opposite corner. In a group of 5 or so we got to design a truss, analyse the truss so that it can hold 500g AND break at 1.5kg, a factor of safety of between 1 and 3. Sorry for my metric system, as I know a lot of you are American, but too bad :icon_thumright:. We also had to design a full on turning mechanical system as well as a electronic system (which is my main part in the group).

Here is our test truss with a 600mL waterbottle simulating a weight. I'm the one in purple, and so you know, the truss is between 600mm and 900mm long...I'm not sure because I didn't design it fully.

AND here is it breaking under approximately 1.5 kg...very dodgy weight.

But yeah! I've been really enjoying University, I love the freedom of it and the workspace they've provided us with.

Hey!!! Don't you start trash-talking Murka!!! It ain't our fault that we're right, and the entire rest of the world is wrong. Just go ahead and try to divide by 3. I dare you!

(Actually, I'm still waiting for the entire world to embrace the duodecimal system, which makes more sense to me than either the metric or imperial systems.)

That looks like a fun project. Man, I miss those days.

Don't kid yourself.  It's a hexadecimal world, we're just living in it.  Once the AI systems takes the world over, hex will be implemented upon pain of cyberdeath.

Axkoa, too bad they didn't let you go all "Godzilla" on the crane once you were through with it.  :laughing7:

Thanks everyone!

Yesterday we mounted the base of the crane onto the truss. We mounted all the legs with 3D printed parts. The entire thing was supposed to be 1500g and one of the guys in our group weighed it all and it was 1425g...I just need to fix up my dodgy wiring and gears and then its all fine!

Looking great. Now that you've got your feet wet, why not make a 3D printed guitar body? :laughing7:

I reckon it would be about 10 times harder to 3D print a guitar than just build one out of wood.

That's not saying I wouldn't want to try it... :icon_biggrin:

You'd have something not many people would have. :icon_thumright:
