Side dots on face of fretboard?

So I ordered a neck with no fretboard inlay because I like the clean look, but I've realized that although it's not problematic for me it can make teaching and showing stuff to others difficult. That got me thinking, would warmoth be able to inlay the smaller side dots on the face of the board? Small enough for a clean look, but still visible to others up close.

I doubt they'd do it, but you can always call. There's no hemming and hawing around - they'll tell you right up front.

You could just buy a neck with slots, but no inlays or frets.

That way it would be easy to install the inlays yourself, or have it done. I buy all my necks that way. I don't put inlays in my own necks, although I like your idea and may do that on the next one. But, I do like to burnish/polish the fretboard, which Warmoth won't do. Can't do that (or install inlays) with frets in the way.

That would be a great idea. My Godin has small fretboard dots that are set to the low e side.

The more I see that, the better I like it. Here's a couple Godins with contrasting fretboards/dots...

What could possibly be wrong with that?

ooh that sexy! never tried them but always liked the godin stuff as well as the seagull acoustics. I may give a call to warmoth tomorrow but i'm still debating with myself. i also feel bad making changes to my order but i'm so indecisive! i hate myself!

Call the W and report back.  If not, I will on my next neck order.
That's a no go from Warmoth, said they would have to pay a programmer for the cnc machine and that costs a lot. I might settle for those inlay decals if I really need the dots later on

That's a great idea. And they'd be real inlays instead of stickers. Plus, I could install threaded inserts, burnish the neck, fab up a nut, level/crown/dress/polish the frets, set the truss rod and cut the nut slots to the right depth. I think everybody should send me their necks. I'm cheap and easy, and not too proud to say so  :laughing7:

You heard the man.

My next neck will to Cagey before it's sent to Sweden. No question about it  :icon_thumright:

wait that sounds confusing, i mean you'd do inlay work on a neck that has frets already installed?

Those small dots like you're talking about are probably doable, but it would be better if it weren't fretted. If you only recently oredered your neck, you could call them and ask that they don't install the frets. The only downside is the cost of fret installation is built into the neck, so there's no discount to not get frets. You're actually doing them a favor by relieving them of that bit of work.

On the plus side, fret installation is not that tough unless the neck is bound. Most of the labor is in the levelling/crowning/dressing/polishing, which they don't do. So, if you were going to get that done anyway, whoever does that work isn't likely to charge much to install frets. I know I don't.

hmm...i'll have to think about it, but regardless of whether i choose to get inlays or not i'll keep you in mind for the fretwork. thanks
