SALVAGING A PROJECT GONE HORRIBLY WRONG!

Hola Peeps!

I am a long time lurker, finally got around to registering today. About a year ago, I bought a Warmoth chambered Strat body, Schaller hard-tail. Being impatient ( and an idiot ), I couldn't wait for Warmoth to finish it properly. I had to have that sucker NOW. So, it was delivered without finish.

Anybody see where this is going?

I botched the finishing BADLY, it was awful. Filler didn't fill, sanding didn't sand, staining......stained everything I own 'cept the wood itself.

What's an idiot to do when said idiot realizes things are too far gone to fix? Call a local hippie to paint the f@#ker like an old school bus and hold your breath.

      Two weeks and $100 later:

Tom's head would explode in frustration, like I thought mine was gonna when I knocked the edge of the neck pocket with a palm sander. Dale The Hippie turned it around, though. This thing makes me smile every time I see it. No joke.

I think the concept was solid.  It was the execution that was flawed.

It looks like you hand painted those images with some sort or oil based or other type of paint that will build up and not be flat.  If you are looking for a super smooth finish that cannot be.

Help us understand how you applied the finish.

TO KEEP the artwork, the only option I see if to BURY it in clear.  this may take a while considering the build up of color.

Hippie Dale painted this with some sort of industrial strength paint. When I picked it up, here's how he explained it: " When you came into town, man, you went by the Subway sandwich shop, right? Did you see that HUGE sub sandwich painted on the outside wall? The twenty footer? I painted that years ago with the same stuff I used on this. It's like epoxy or something, it'll never come off..."

It looks rough because it is rough. It's unique as can be and won't win a 2nd grade art contest, but I love it.  :toothy10:

DMR, this is how it looks after the salvage job.

Glenn, not sure I'd want to live with it but if it makes you happy, it's cool. My guitars make me smile too but they'd probably be a lot of people's garish metallic nightmare!

Why do you think it's a project gone horribly wrong? I'll bet dollars to donuts that NO ONE has a strat like that one....ANYWHERE. Besides, its not the paint scheme or color that makes it sound good or not. Finish it up with quality pickups and parts and it will definitely be a head turner at gigs.

Around where I live, there are tons of motorcycle shops that do custom paint jobs.  I would take it there, and see if they can put some layers of clear coat on it and get it reasonably smooth.  I bet they can.

That strat will be unbelievable once it's clear coated and shiny.

It's a shame so much of the artwork will be under the pick guard.

This is where it will take some creativity, but you can go with a clear pickguard and some vinyl underneath to hide the openings just about where the cutouts are.

Or, put some copper shielding in those cavities to neaten it up and go with a clear pick guard leaving everything under it exposed.. wiring and all. It's already a butchered project... Just go with it and be proud you have the only one. I love it!  :toothy10:

The Garcia characture is priceless.  In the words of Johnny Cash " I'll have the only one there is in town"  LOL.  I like it, I would finish it up and play the dead out of it because the more relic it gets, the cooler it will be. IMHO
