Rosewood Finishing

Hey  :)
I was just wondering why you can't get finishing on rosewood necks. I wanted to get one with gloss but I can't   :(  Please reply  :party07:

Rosewood is usually left raw.  Only place I have ever seen finish rosewood is Rickenbacker.  The natural oils in rosewood can make it difficult to finish at times.

Give them a call or email - they don't allow finishing on the "no finish required" woods in the builder or showcase, presumably because it's a rare request, but some of those woods definitely will take a finish. Rosewood can certainly be finished; I've seen furniture in finished rosewood. But I can't guarantee it was a finish Warmoth offers.

Definitely call them.  I think they'll do it, considering they have gloss finished rosewood bodies in stock right now:

Another thing: you might consider just sanding the neck with very, very fine sand paper.

This will sound odd, given your request for a glossy neck, but hear me out.

I have a rosewood neck, and, at the advice of forum regulars, sanded my neck with 600, then 1000, then 2000 grit sand paper. (My understanding is that the Warmoth necks are shipped after they've been sanded with 300 grit.) Then I wiped it with some plain old lemon oil I bought at target. It feels so nice on my hand now. It's super-slick, much more so than my fender neck which has a glossy neck.

I spent less than 5 minutes with each grit, as it didn't take much time at all (I just did the back of the neck where my hand touches) to smooth it out.

Oh sweet Jesus, please don't finish Rosewood! :help:
It is the perfect wood exactly as it is. Arguably the best feeling raw wood Warmoth offers.

You're mellowing, Joseph .... "Arguably?"  You're usually given to absolute pronouncements about this sort of thing.

I suspect that any species of Ebony would feel even better, but Ebony is not a common Warmoth offering.

Yeah, I would say just sand it and slime it. OR play 12 hours a day for a decade, that's the finish everyone's trying to imitate anyway.
