Rolled Edges

Here is a cool picture I just had to post.  This is a great shot of nicely rolled edges on a fatback with perfectly dressed 6100 frets.  I remember the good old days when Warmoth would roll the edges of a neck for $15.00.   I rolled this one and all the others I get but I sure do miss them coming from Warmoth rolled.

That's actually pretty soft rolling for some manufacturers.

The challenge with rolling fingerboard edges is just how far to go.  What I like is way too much for most folks.  It is very much a matter of personal preference.

I wish they would add that option again. Rolled edges are almost a 'must' and I love how for example Tyler necks feel.

One for the suggestion box :)...

so, if someone were to roll their own, so to speak, how is it done?

I've rolled the edges on a maple board without damaging the finish.  Instead of sanding the wood you press/crush it into shape.  Use something heavy and hard.  I used a metal rod.

The more I think about it, I don't need to roll my edges so much as I need to dress the fret ends. They're poking out ever so slightly. What to do?

Do both.  If you're mechanically challenged like me, I end up rolling the edges of the fingerboard after balling the ends of the frets in order to get rid of all the file marks in the wood.  I use a file to knock the edge of the fingerboard off and then run sandpaper along the length of the fingerboard.  You could use a wood block or I use a piece of dense foam.  Not sure if this is the best way to do it, but it has worked for me.

That's interesting - did you roll the rod across the surface, or drag it? Does that make sense?

I think a bit of both actually.  I thought for sure that I would mess up the finish...but no.
