He had a great life, that he constructed himself, and it turned out to be far beyond his expectations. I'm a stage-4 music biography junkie, and it often strikes me how happy these guys were/are - Leo Fender, Bill Lawrence, Marshall, whoever. The dead ones died with a workbench full of stuff that "needed" tinkering with, because what else did he really want? And 88 is long enough, really; he surely knew that his age would blow him up if he didn't keep busy, rather than the other way around.
