The King of Surf Guitar passed away today at the age of 81...
So play Pipeline or Misirlou in his honor.

RIP.

Saw him twice in the last few years.  I was grateful to have had the opportunity to see such an iconic guitarist perform, but I'd rather he had either the good health or enough money to not have to tour into his 80s just to pay his medical bills.  He'll get some rest now - God knows he earned it!

Well, that's a bummer. He wasn't really all that old by today's standards. One of the greats. RIP, Dick.

A big influence on The Bottomfeeders. We do a couple of his tunes. He will be missed.

His work and artistic voice were unique and instantly identifiable as him. That's about the highest accomplishment any artist can aspire to.

Well done, Dick Dale.

I always appreciated how he pretty much created the soundtrack for surfing by means if traditional Lebanese music. It worked.

Also: .16-.60 gauge strings.  :o

Only a manly gauge of strings could withstand his ferocious attack.

I read an account of someone who played it who claimed that it was really well set up. The action was low so it wasn't hard to fret.

I don't know Dale's full repertoire, but from what I have heard he wasn't a big string bender.

Still, a .16 is what I use for a B string on my acoustic.  :o
