The test body arrived and has a few dings in it. For $28 I am not complaining. It's a chance learn new skills for prepping for paint!

So is basic wood putty the best option to fill them? Is there a better material or technique?

Depends how deep and if they add character.  On small dings I've used a wet cloth and a team iron.  There a bunch of instructions on the interwebs.

Ebay. It's a test body to test my finishing techniques on and learn some skills on while I wait for the real one to show up. Not bad for the money. Might be thinner than 1 3/4". Need to measure

Wet cloth and soldering iron are your best bet.  For larger dings, a steam iron as others have pointed out.
