refinishing cracking body

Hi
I finished my Warmoth body a couple of years ago in Nitro, and it's just starting to crack. I have never been really happy with the finish and would like to re-clear it, maybe with poly.
Should I remove the old nitro first?
If I use acetone to remove it, will this also damage the wood stain underneath?

my apologies, I was a little misleading.
It's the finish that is cracking. I understand that in a lot of cases, this would be desirable, but I was going for a more "PRS" like gloss finish...

you can reflow cracked lacquer with amalgamator then after that dries, which might take a week or so, you can go over it with clear, level, and then shoot the clear again and fix the leveling as needed
