Hello, at first i'd like to say that I am a newbie here, and I'm from Poland, so please excuse my "pakistan english" and all of my silly questions :D

I'd like to build a guitar based on Warmoth parts, you know, I mean a project, which I'll be doing for next 20 years and when i'll end it i will no longer be able to play a guitar because of rheumatism :D
I mean, guitar of my life :D

I mostly play rock, progressive rock, and slightly metal :) If i had to place me and my band it would be somewhere between guns and roses, pearl jam, tool and dream theater, so my guitar surely won't be anywhere near the stratocaster :D in addition, despite i play such different music than he does, i am impressed by modern Carlos Santana tone, and i'd like my guitar to be a compromise between that thick fat warm PRS Santana sound and more modern hi-gain distortion axes :) Now i play Blade Durango Deluxe, a quite well build PRS copy, and my previous guitars was Vintage Lemon Drop Les Paul and Epi SG G400. Because of tonal characteristics, and a fact that you can buy a cheap routed body blank from warmoth, i am very keen on an all mahogany body.

So, my idea of this guitar is:

-All mahogany body, which I would designed and sculped by myself (i thought about something between PRS and a Petrucci music man shape)
-Double humbecker, I played a SH2 Jazz and Sh4 Jeff beck combination for a long time, it suits me, but for this axe i thought about combination of Dimarzio Air Norton and PRS HFS for bridge. I haven't checked tech specifications yet, but i think that for an all mahogany body i need something more crispy and bright than SH2 SH4...
-Fishman Strat-tremolo Powerbridge (piezo, awww :D)
-Aaaaand, something that i have to discuss....

...i'd like to have raw unfinished neck :) I played Music Man Petrucci and neil zaza's cort, and the unfinished or oiled necks are awesome ! :D And, there is a little problem. I would have all mahogany body, if i could i'd probably had a body with a maple top to balance the sound af such guitar, but I cant. I'd also have an maple neck, but i've read that it's risky to play on unfinished maple neck. So, what wood i should have for neck? I thought about such combinations:

all mahogany body-Satine Neck-rosewood fingerboard
all mahogany body-purpleheart Neck-ebony fingerboard
all mahogany body-canary Neck-ebony fingerboard

What do you think about my idea?

Btw: I know that warmoth cannot ship to Poland, but i'll figure it out somehow :D

Rosewood neck... If you're after PRS and LP tone, that's very it...

Welcome to the board :)

You know they DON'T ship? Weird, they ship to south america, europe, asia....

I thought about rosewood, in fact, one of guitars of my dreams is MM Axis BFR, with all rosewood neck, and rosewood top :) It's really beautifull, and one was on poish e-bay two months ago, for about 900 euro... Eaaargh, i missed it :D But, about rosewood neck with all mahogany body, wouldn't it be too mellow (i mean thick and bassy) for progressive rock and metal?

Hmm, I haven't ring to warmoth yet, but on one of polish guitar websites my buddy told me that it's very difficult to get shipment to Poland from warmoth :) I know, Poland is a strange country :D And, if neck would have some issues, the cost of double shipment would be higher than cost of the neck :D But as i've said i'll figure it out, I've got some family in US, so maybe i'll get shipment on their adress :)

I not sure about progressive rock... But *i* don't think it'll be too bassy, specially if you use pickups that match it well... In the end more than 50% is about the pickups...

But it's very personal stuff, some people get a very thin maple/ebony neck with 25.5" scale put some really trebly pickup, put the treble knob on amp (perhaps a JCM800) on 10 and the bass knob on 2 and think it's a very "thick, fat and mean tone" :laughing7:

An Indian Rosewood neck is going to be very similar in tone to mahogany.

A Canary neck with an Ebony board is going to be very similar in tone to maple.

i like this idea, too. will sound like maple, and feel great a smooth without feeling too slippery and glossy! my hands sweat when i play, so i like necks without finishes. seems to fit me best.

I've got a couple of axes with canary necks, but have so many guitars I don't play any individual one that much, and don't sweat much.

If you have really sweaty palms, you might want to hit the back of the neck with a light oiling of WATCO Danish Oil occasionally, I'd worry that prolonged exposure to a lot of sweat might affect the coloration, but again, don't know for sure...

Anybody else on the board have an idea?

i have a EVH wolfgang carved top that has an unfinished neck, its amazing and i mean i've heard many things about how if u sweat too much then its gonna warp or something but honestly i've played that thing for about 9 years and the only thing i can complain about is it gets a bit of dirt and muck around the frets and sometimes in areas on the back but it still plays as well as it did when i first bought it. my hands sweat a lot on that thing. But funny enough when i put together my warmoth LP (its in the gallery under my name) i had them finish it in satin and honestly between that and the wolfgang i really can't tell the difference between the two. Actually i think i'd prefer the satin because over time the more you play it it turns in to a kinda glossy finish which looks cool.

I have sweaty palms and all my raw necks (rosewood, bubinga, wenge) seem to be holding up fine.  I only use orange oil on them.
