Greetings, looking at pup options for a new build, and came across Railhammers while viewing vids comparing pups from Mike Stamper on youtube. From what I've seen, his collection of vids is the most expansive and apples to apples comparisons of pups in a variety of tonal settings....highly recommended.
I have a SD Custom in my LPC, and am a fan of it, but it can be a little too edgy at times. Years ago, in my 1st electric (1975 LPD with HB's), someone installed a Dimarzio Super Distortion which was "it" at the time. I like the SD Custom better. I saw Dimarzio had a sale going that inspired me to look at their pups. Their Fortitude was pretty interesting but just missing enough highs for me. These days, I don't see much praise for the them, but the PAF Pro, especially the neck pup, sounds in my lane. From the vids, I like the PAF Pro over the SD 59 or Jazz for a neck pup.
So, the Railhammers. From the vids, the Hyper Vintage humbucker is very in range of what I'm looking for, with their Alinco Grande and Anvil being up there too. But what really blew me away was their humless P90 pups. I know absolutely zero about P90's, and never had an interest in them until seeing these vids for these pups. Tis amazing, I've been listening to the vids and one day the Cleanput will sound better, today the Heavy90 sounds like the perfect offset to a rocking humbucker. From what I'm hearing, the P90 types have more subtlety, less compression and more clarity than a humbucker, but fatter with more beef than a Strat'esque single coil. Again, never dipped into the P90 world before, and there is a lot to explore, but I'm very impressed by the Railhammer options. Have no idea how other brands compare, but I'm digging these.
A long winded way of asking.....does anyone have experience with Railhammer pups, and what are your thoughts? They tickle my want of something a little different, and at least from vids I've seen, they sound terrific.
