I'm getting Van Zandt pups for this latest build. Is it necessary to get the pickup covers for them or can I just leave them with the wires exposed? I don't sweat heavily so the chances of me sweating into the pickup cavities is slim to none. I just think they'd look cool without the covers. So, are they necessary?

You don't have to have covers but... Those wires are so easy to break and depending on your picking style, if you hook one finger on the pickup while picking or jam a pick in there, the risk of breaking one increases.

I like that look too. Some pickups wires fill up the bobbin and that puts the wires in even greater danger. Also if you put your guitar down hard that could cause the pup to "whiplash" in the cavity and touch the pickguard if you have one.

You could try it for a while and see how it goes..

Cool. I'm fairly gentle with my guitars so it probably won't be a problem. Not sure if I hook a finger or not. Never really paid any attention to that one. Will from now on though.

The only other reason I can think of is that some people get their first string caught under the lip of the bobbin while playing.  The result can be anywhere from mildly annoying....all the way to serious pickup damage.  It depends on your play style and setup though.

Guitar Fetish has clear covers.  I got some for the guitar my son and I rebuilt.  They give you the look, and the protection.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. Guitlouie, I'm going to look into the clear covers. Thanks for that.

saw some on a humbucker that looked pretty cool

I've got an uncovered single coil on my first warmoth, and to be safe I just wrapped the coils themselves in a bit of electrical tape. No problems thus far...

I went to that site and couldn't find any clear pup covers. I then did a Google search and came up empty. Elusive little booger's, eh?

Yeah, but I think with this guitar the coils showing would look pretty bad assed.

I won the auction tonight. My Van Zandt pickups should be here by Friday at the latest. I got them on Yahoo Auction here in Japan....from a guitar shop. 200 bucks for the 3 piece set. I know I could get them in the US for about 180 but when you toss in shipping and possible import tax, not to mention it taking about 10 days to get here, 200 coming the day after tomorrow sounded like a good deal.

Yeah, I'm not sure they sell those covers separate. I had looked into those when they first came out. Maybe if you send them an email they could come off a few.

Yeah, sorry, I got them with some pickups we got from GF, I just assumed they would have them available, but I can't find them on their site, except with the Boston Blues series pickups.  Would't hurt to ask them though!

True enough. I'll drop them a line.
