Possibly stupid noob questions

HI All,

New to the board, and have read pretty widely on it so far. Of course, everyone's build is different, and it seems we get parts of answers from other people'sd trials and tribulations but here goes with my questions.

I'm planning on a Black Korina SG, and want to have a quite natural finish that highlights any contrasts in the wood, and leaves much of the texture of the wood in place.  I'm planning on using tru-oil, or soemthing similar, and wanted to hear some suggestions about what I should use to a) emphasise the dark parts of the Black Korina, and b) put over the top of the tru-oil (wax, etc- any brand suggestions?). I live in Australia so any resident Aussies know of where I can buy stuff? I know I can go to gun shops for the tru-oil.

Many thanks, Cletus.

I don't have answers for you, but please post pics when you're done.  That sounds rad, and there are not enough Warmoth SGs in the world.

From the thread title I was thinking "I don't remember making this thread... oh... its not me.... for once...."

You can be sure I will post pics (everyone wants a little of that "Guitar of the month signature bling)  and thankyou both for the warm welcome. It seems like a great little community here, happy to be a part of it.

you might want to PM TroubledTreble to see what he did to bring out all the highlights in his guitar. it's the current GOTM winner up in the top corner. i think it looks amazing! and he finished it himself.

and welcome to the forum! can't wait to see another SG around here. definitely not enough of them!

With the black korina I have at home for my custom builds, even if I just wet the top a little, it darkens up dramatically, so I wouldn't be worried that the black parts won't be heavy enough.  It's hard to make korina look bad.

TT got back to me, and said basically the same thing. Good man! Unfortunately Warmoth are running empty on colourful Korina (what's the point of patying extra if it looks plain?) and they said to check back in a month or two :(

Welcome, I'm a semi noob. Warmoth told me it would be a bit but it ended up being only a few days and they came up with a stunning piece of wood. The force will be with you.
Me sis lives in Melbourne. Cheers

Just throwing it out there cause it seems appropriate and I wish someone had told me, make sure you only buy the amount of tru-oil you will need, which for one body (and a neck?) is not very much. I bought a big 8 oz. bottle thinking I would get a few guitars and other wood projects out of it and then found out it goes bad after about 6 months. I have a big can of tung oil in my drawer now  :laughing7:

P.S. This is just a huge amount of win. I wanted to build a BK SG a while ago, but love my gibson too much to do it.

It's funny, I had just gonje to a site and looked at the big bottle. You saved me $. Cheers fella.

And thanks PT- I'll keep at them I think and see how I go.

So you just bit the bullet and bought your body and hoped for the best?

From what ive seen people do this all the time, and Warmoth never has let them down. Also if you can get word to them that its going to be under a transparent finish they DO put in some extra effort to find you a nice piece.

I would use a Tung Oil personally. I put 6 coats on my "Driftwood" strat and with each application it seemed to really bring out the grain. The first coat I applied I let stand for 24 hours then buffed with a cloth and before my next application went over it with 0000 steel wool. Then each coat I did after that I applied the tung oil, waited about 5 minutes then buffed with a cloth, let sit for 24 hours and repeated. It can take some time with 24 hours between coats but it's worth it when completed. Mine still looks old and "rough" but it's as smooth as glass. If the finish is getting to glossy buff lightly with 0000 wool and it's slightly dull the finish without loosing the luster. You can see how my finish turned out by looking under "work in progress" then click on the "Driftwood" strat project. I'd be happy to help with any questions.

I better ask my wife Brandeen what you talkin about.

On a more sensible note, In the interests of not clogging up the board I though I would post my next thought (it's easy to count them) in this thread until my perfect body and neck woods magically appears.

I've been tossing up the infinite options available to me for my build, and I'm now thinking about electronics. Specifically (ha ha, wait for it you juveniles) knobs. Now this SG I'm planning is just for me, not for playing live or anything, and in the interests of ti being as beautiful as it can be I was thinking of just using 1 tone and 1 volume knob with the standard SG switch. Something like the one pictured here.

Vote yea, or Nay (go with the standard 4 knob arrangement?

+1 for 2 knobs.  (haha, knobs).  4 can be kinda fussy on an SG IMHO.  Really, if it were me and it was just for sit'n-and-pick'n I'd be tempted to just go 1 volume and 1 switch.

Incidentally, that has to be one of the laziest websites I've seen in a long time...

the internet Circa 1998 called.

they want you to know that even then, there were more attractive websites.

In fact, I think I remember my craptastic Angelfire site for the metal band I was in from that era was better than that... :party07:

Haha, when I was in 6th grade, maybe 5th grade, I started learning web design. I had an angelfire account I used at first.... my parents made a typo in the address (Not sure what the typo was, maybe one of you guys can figure it out if you wanted) and brought up a porn site when showing my family
