Peghead Veneer?

Hi all,
In Warmoths neck descriptions they mention the "peghead veneer" option. I've also seen many builds that use this, but I don't see the option for it on any of the necks in the custom builder. Am I missing something? Or is this option only available by specifically requesting it?

It's not a standard option.  You will need to ask for it in the additional notes when the order is complete and tell them how you want it finished as well.  Keep in mind that they won't match finishes unless they shoot it at the same time.  The wood on the body will also have to match the kind of veneer that you are asking for in order for them to do it.

That being said, I asked nicely for them to match a black dye maple top I bought in the showcase and they did, but it was one of their standard fininshes. Never hurts to ask.

Gotcha, thanks. Also would a flame maple neck naturally have a flamed headstock? I mean it's one piece of wood so it would have to right? Because I like the idea of having a flame maple neck and the same pattern on the headstock, and that wouldn't require an additional veneer

No, they always veneer flamed maple necks with a plain maple headstock veneer.

Oh ok. Why do they do that exactly? It seems like extra work

You see, the tonz termites like the flame. if they see flame, they will eat your neck.

Getting a flamed peghead violates warranty, as the tonz termites will get to it one way or another if they see your strutting your flame so naively.

Warmoth only offers 3A as their highest grade for necks and fretboards.  Fom what I have seen, the veneers are a higher grade maple - more worthy of showcasing, so to speak.  Foe example, my 3A maple fretboard looks nothing like a flame top that you would see on a high end body, but still cool IMHO.  So yes, more work, but a finer product.

Yes, I know.  I was going to respond with, "Altar, you are a too young to be drinking, even for an underage drinker," but I decided to respond to rory's question instead.

I had a feeling it was a joke but I've heard of alot of silly things being done like that before. Not the termite thing of course  :icon_tongue:
One last question, how much does the veneer usually run, for say a dye finish on flame maple, if they do those?

You'll have to call them for a quote.  I know that mine wasn't cheap (around $200 extra), but I asked for a quite a bit: quilted maple veneer, black dye, black gloss edge, and a clear gloss finish, with the reast of the neck and fretboard satin nitro.

Lovely indeed. I dig the figure on the fretboard too. Any more flame might be a bit much for a board IMO. I've seen pics of the standard flame maple option (rather than 3A) on fingerboards/necks and some of em just look like plain old maple. I think yours is just right. You have pics of the rest of the guitar?

Wow that's nice. The maple contrasts the black really well. Can't wait to build my first, don't have the cash now but in a few months I'll be ready

Warmoth does have offerings of higher grades than 3A.  You just have to ask for them, and then be ready to pay for them...
This is Cherry Bomb, an example of some of W's higher grades of flame.

You have to ask for it on the order form, as has been mentioned. It's either a $45 or $55 adder, depending on the wood. They line it all out here.

After that, finishing can take many forms. You can go crazy, like Mr. Combover seems to have done, or just get the whole thing finished in the standard fashion for the same price any neck finish costs, and other points in between. For instance, a different finish on the headstock vs. the neck proper will run you another $45.

I got a curly Koa veneer on a standard Koa neck once, and it was just a $55 adder. I had to get it finished anyway, so I don't call the finish an adder.

Incidentally, the finish on that neck was a "vintage tint gloss". No stain.
