Painting a color fade to black like Fender Dark Night Finish

I'm planning to order some nitro paint from ReRanch and I'd like to paint something like the Fender Dark Night finish, using either Lake Placid Blue or maybe changing it up to more like an Ocean Turquoise around the outside fading to black on the inside.  I have no experience with Nitro and am concerned that if I start with black and then paint over with color, will it work? or does it need a lighter color underneath?  Does anyone have any experience with this?

If it helps, I'm planning to order an Alder Strat body.

Thanks, this is perfect! Exactly what I was looking for. Even got to see what it would look like in green. I think I’ll most likely do the ocean turquoise because I think I’d rather have an inbetween blue and green color.
