Other companies offer painted headstocks. Seems like it would be easy enough for Warmoth to do, but it's not an online option.

They do offer this and it can be ordered online. Though it is not a drop down item.

All you would do is pick the other finish you want, satin or gloss for example then add to the order notes that you would like a headstock face done in the colour of your choice and that you accept the up charge. Or contact Warmoth sales with the specs of what you would like.

What he said.  I've done this in the past.  The W does a fantastic job of this

Are there limitations on this, e.g. wood type (roasted maple springs to mind), satin on the back and gloss on the front, etc.?

Nope, but for some exotics there will be an upcharge for obvious reasons.

Well, in the case of roasted maple necks they do suggest strongly that the whole neck should be finished as well due to risk of the neck getting uneven exposure to humidity (my explanation, not theirs).
I ordered a Jaguar neck in roasted maple with a painted headstock and agreed to it being finished with the clear satin finish.
Feels and looks great IMO.

Is that gloss on the headstock and satin on the rest of the neck?  I presume the satin is nitro and the glass is poly. If so that's good to know they can do that.
