Has anyone ever spray painted pickup covers a custom color? Did it turn out okay? Did it last or did it flack off?

yeah i did it on my strat. Painted them red and it hasn't flaked or anything. but i painted over a set of magenta-ish covers so...

best bet would be to find some covers on ebay. they'll cost roughly the same as a can of spraypaint anyways.

You can also use RIT clothing dye to change the color of your covers. It is best to start with the ones Fender sells (white ones). There are other brands that work but also some that don't work quite as well. The Fender ones are easy to find.

Just mix the dye per directions, including a little salt, then get the water hot but not boiling. Hold the covers with a paper clip through the screw hole and dunk them in frequently pulling them out until the color is what you want. Don't let the covers rest on the bottom of the pot! Meltdown!

It can be useful to first immerse the covers in warm water for a minute or so before dying. Then after dying rinse them in warm water for a few seconds. The dye can be stored in a sealed glass jar for a while if you have more projects to do later. Each dye pack only cost about $1. They have a good color selection and it can be a fun project. The color won't come off and scratches won't show through.

man, thanks TroubledTreble. i didn't want to try this, but that explanation was so good i feel like going out and finding a guitar to try this on  :icon_biggrin: could be really cool!

Does dye work on anything else besides pickup covers?

I'm thinking of knobs and pickguards and stuff like that.

Yep, it does. I recently tried a pickguard but it did work at all, not even a little. It depends on the material of course. Knobs work very well.
