P90 with tele single coil

How would a P90 in the neck position match volume wise with a tele single coil bridge pickup?  I know neck pups are louder and P90s are loud pups so I'm not sure it will match well...

Be tough to match there, as most P90's are louder than a good HB.

If you wanted to do it.... I'd call Lindy Fralin's shop and talk to them about it.

Getting something like their blues special tele pickup and a -20percent underwound p90 might be ok

OR

They might say go with one of their strat sized "p90 type" pickup - steel poles with magnets below the pickup.  I say that since once you start to underwind a p90 a lot, it does get a bit more strattish.

OR

Try the excellent neck pickup from the Texas Special strat set, along with the 52RI Fender bridge pickup - now THAT would be a VERY tasty combination

OR

Just live with it

I'm going for a BB#1 and Blues Special... and am gonna live with it (it wont be that much of a mis-match tho)

Thanks CB.  How much of a difference would there be between them anyways?  If it's not too bad then I'll just live with it.

I put a 57Classic in the neck of a tele, with a Fender 52ri in the bridge, and was able to "just" get them to work fairly well together.

The P90 usually blows a 57 Classic out of the water in terms of volume.

I have a tele with 2 "duncan designed" p90s in it and they both howl.

I'm actually making a W BFG, i'll be ordering tomorrow probably, I"m thinking of getting a TX BBQ and Bastard set for it.. i think maybe the fat bastard will be a little overwhelming.

Hmm, now here's a thought [sorry OP, this won't help you at all  :laughing7: ]

Imagine a Strat. Texas special neck, SOMETHING in the middle, and a tele bridge pup, like the 52ri. Or a broadcaster pup. Regardless, what would the middle pickup be? Some sort of strat pickup certainly, but what?

I have Lollars in my thinline. I chose the highest tele bridge and the P90 is wound -5% than his normal P90's. The P90 is still louder but not much. P90's are great pickups, they have almost the clean sound of Fender sized single coils and they are great for overdriven sounds like humbuckers.

After an enlightening visit to guitar center I have realized that I love humbuckers and don't really like Tele bridge pickups that much   So I guess I don't need to worry about this.

Is that actually possible?

Oh BS on that.  You didn't play any real tele bridge pickup at Guitar Center - you played tele pickup "wannabees".

I'm sorry if my taste is different than yours.  It's just my opinion.  And I played $1300+ fender American deluxe Teles so they weren't "wannabees"

Let me speculate and try to translate CB's response.  It's the good ole days syndrome of, "They don't make 'em like they used too."  In  other words, there's no real Teles down there.

Ok i see.  But still the Tele pickups aren't my style.  I play a little heavier than that.  Humbuckers suit my style better,  I play bluesy rock to metal.

Yah they were.  When you get in to the Fender Custom shop pickups, they're pretty good.  Most of the Fralins are good too.  The production Fender stuff... the best they offer is the current 52ri set (called something else now), but its not like the sets of say 10 years ago, which were basically custom shop sets.  The Antiquities from Duncan are not bad, but I'd rather have a slightly overwoound Fralin, as being closest to the real deal from say 52 to 55.
