I haven’t decided if the whole guitar will be in that pattern or if it will just be on the front with silver sides and back or black sides and back.
I have time to decide though since I ordered this at the end of October.  The neck is already done, but the body was custom since they don't seem to stock rear route telecasters.  I will probably start a new construction thread when I begin working on it.  Then I can show pictures of my ghettotastic paint booth I built in my basement.  :toothy12:

I think the more I look at the pattern, and then lay it out in my mind, the more I like. I really have no point of reference to a tele body size so I cannot make a suggestion to size of squares as it really needs to be laid out on a piece of construction paper, what I mean is make a few cut outs of a body and then do a pattern over them each having the squares of a different size. Post that up and we can give you feed back on how big to make the squares.  Just a thought.
About the back, I like backs that change, but that is just me. I think it adds a bit of class to have the back different
:rock-on:

Here is a quick mock up for the sizes of the squares.  My photoshop skills are not so great, but it gives the general idea.

I am torn
the large size gives it a certain bold appeal
but the small size has max bling

I like the idea.  Its different, but still in the realm of cool.

Are you using two white paints, or white and silver or what?  It looks different from your test board to the mock up.  In either case, its a cool concept.  Like what Rick Neilson would do if he wasn't so over the top (not that over the top is bad either.)

Keep us posted.  Looking forward to seeing your spray booth too.

It is going to be the colors of the test board.  The difference in color for the different sized squares is due to my crappy photoshop skills :P  On the actual guitar both squares will have the metalic flecks as the paint I used on my test board was a left over chrome enamel that I cannot use.  There is a chance that I will use a straight silver instead of one of the metalics to accentuate the difference and make it more similar to my test board.

The large size is more dramatic, and will be a lot less work to tape off.  That'd be my choice for both of those reasons.

Yes, it looks a lot cleaner with less squares.

I found a picture of a telecaster with a checkered pattern.  I am torn between the largest ones and the small ones like on this guitar.

Wow, they even did the pickup cover in checks.

I'd go with the largest or second largest ones from your mock up. It'll look bolder and be easier to mask that way.

And if you can, try to continue the pattern around to the back and sides, like on Buddy Guy's Strat.

Also, is a paint booth in the basement really a good idea?

The paint booth is built around a window in the basement so it can have ventilation. I also purchased a special mask for when I am in the booth. With the window for ventilation plus the mask I thought I would be good.
