Yesterday, I saw live:

MR. BIG!!!!!!

Man, man, WOW! they ROCKED dude! Can't remember the entire set, but I do remember FIVE encores, amongst others:
to be with you
colorado bulldog
song by the Who, can't remember how its called, not a superhuge the Who-fan :p
and 2 others I can't remember.

playing double neck guitars, using harmonica's as slides for the bass, with eric martin playing Billy's bass whilst still around Billy's neck :p Paul's Tone was impecable. He played so freakin good, tight, crunchy, dirty and awesome, wow. Many small intermezzo's, unscheduled. Halfway, Billy felt the need to play a little solo, Paul was annoyed he wasn't allowed to play, so he 'answered' Billy's solo, and Eric just came in, to scat/sing a solo of his own :p Not to mention their covers of Riff Raff, Fly like an eagle, and some other well-known songs halfway Addicted to that rush.

Am I addicted? OH yeah...

Normally Baba O'Reilly.  They do a great version.

I have to say.  I do like a bit of Mr Big.  Got a DVD of one their old concerts from the early 90's somewhere.  Eric has a great voice, Billy is Killer and Paul is just nuts.  Good drummer too, but I cant remember his name.

It's really a shame they never get enough credit for being a monster live band, especially the 1999 tour (Live and Kickin' DVD/Raw Like Sushi CDs).

The drummer is Pat Torpey.

I should have tried harder to go see them in Japan last June, but I was being a snob and only wanted to go to the Budokan show. Somehow "I saw Mr. Big in Fukuoka" doesn't have the same bragging ring, ya know? I was dumb.

They'll play Singapore and Seoul next month, but I'm off to Tokyo this month to see Shakalabbits (and buy the DVD of Mr. Big's Budokan show!) and to Finland  in November to work for Warner Hodges (Dan Baird & Homemade Sin). So it would be stretching my wallet and my boss's patience to see another show.

Of course, if Hong Kong was 1/10th the 'World City' it incessantly trumpets itself as, we'd get more international acts.

Then again, most of them are now going to Macau to play the Venetian anyway. I'll keep my fingers crossed that Mr. Big decides to add one there!

Sorry for the digression there at the end...

I know the LP comment was directed at Orpheo, the resident LP aficionado.  Paul Gilbert is such an Ibanez hound, the LPs he does own are the of Ibanez "lawsuit" variety.

Paul Gilbert is a really interesting lick writer, something that only addicts notice - anybody with a metronome and a few spare 16-hour-a-day years can get quick, but Gilbert plays interesting things. More so than Vai or Satriani, IMO. He's not quite writing Morsian or Johnsonian-level instrumentals yet, but his 2nd solo album is better than the 1st, and the 1st was really good.

Saw Mr. Big Sunday night in Singapore. Flew there from Hong Kong just for the show.

Small stage, small crowd (+/-2,000), but a great show and great sound. The weather was typical Singaporean/equatorial steambath, so I give the band credit for playing over 2 hours.

Most of the show is on Youtube by now, too!

I bought the VIP package, so I got to meet the band and get a photo.

The local security were really impressed by how down-to-earth the band was, and they were really impressed with the Less Paul, too!

After the show, the band signed a few things and the security guys took the Less Paul first. The band signed the back of the headstock. All four of them, so the signatures are small.

But I'm happy with it!
