So with some part of my Warmoth order on the way as my UPS email told me, I'm ready to start diving into the tricky parts of my project.  I'm trying to get a neck plate with a customized serial number to show my birthdate: 091783

I've also considered buying a parted out vintage strat with a true serial number, just to give my project a little extra feeling.  I'm a sap for vintage, so to have the real deal would be amazing, but people are asking RIDICULOUS prices I would never fathom paying.

So I bought a neckplate and figured I would try and get Things Remembered to custom engrave it, and if anything, I only wasted a few bux for the neckplate.  I was very specific in my engraving, but in the end the result is this:

This is not what I wanted.  Not even remotely close.  So, getting a mainstream engraving seems like a dead end.

Does anyone have any advice for getting an engraving that is super duper close to the real thing, or any good deals on the real thing?  I'm looking for this basic look:

One of the members here, DangerousR6, engraves many of the member's neckplates. There's a long thread on them where you can see the various pieces he's done. He may be able to do what you want, but if you don't like what the engravers did on your first go-round, I'm not sure you'll like what Doug does, either.

If I remember correctly, Fender's SNs weren't engraved; they were stamped. Makes sense because you could get an indexing stamping machine to knock out unique parts all day long for next to nothing, which is how most OEMs like it. But, reproducing that look requires a similar tool. If you really want it to look like a vintage neckplate, you are probably going to have to buy a vintage neckplate pulled from a wrecked or parted-out Fender of some sort.

Another option would be to get your own stamp, but that might be a tad expensive unless you're going to use it a lot. If that's the case, check out these guys. They sell a variety of indexing stamps like these...

... for either manual or automatic stamping operations.

You should talk to DangerousR6 about a custom neckplate. I have two so far and love them both.

Edit* Someone already beat me to it.  :laughing8:

Stamping!

I'm such a retard.  It makes sense why I haven't been able to find engraving, it wasn't engraved!!!!

Ok, so now my searching will involve stamping, maybe I can find something.

I'm gonna call them and see if they do custom numbering.

Oh and welcome to the funhouse.

Yeh dangerousr6 makes neck plates, and to this day I think only a few necks with his plates have fallen off.

Just kidding, many satisfied owners of his stuff here

I can do a helluva lot better than job than things remembered can.. I can engrave the numbers so they look pretty close to being stamped.... :icon_biggrin:

If I'm not mistaken, you can order neck plates from Callaham that look almost exactly like what you're looking for. However, I think the max number of numerals is 5. Check it out.

Well, Things Remembered doesn't really specialize in it.  The lady didn't even know what it was even after I explained it.

I appreciate the "pretty close", but my next splurge has to be spot on.  I've seen your work, however, and I commend you on it!

Then you're only option is to get it stamped, or buy some stamps and do it yourself. But thanks for the props... :icon_thumright:
