So I have a MIM Fender Strat that is in pieces that I started sanding to bare wood.  I had a couple different ideas, but while looking for paint, and not finding the colors I wanted, I ran across some chalk board spray paint.  The guitar is a complete POS as is anyway, so I figured why not go for something different.  Is there any reason this wouldn't work?  I think it could be a pretty cool deal to do with a cheapo strat.

That would be an awesome guitar. Being able to write over the body with chalk and design an endless number of designs. I say go for it!  :icon_thumright:

Here's another idea that's unusual, durable and not very expensive - use heat-shrinkable self-adhesive model airplane covering. It's made by companies like Top-Flite, Hyperion, etc. and comes in a variety of colors and finishes in Opaques, Transparents, Neons, Metallics, Pearls and Flats. There's a how-to here if you want to see what's involved, but it's fairly simple and only requires a couple inexpensive tools.

This is covered in TopFlite's MonoKote film

What would be cool about it is it's very inexpensive, it's easy to repair, and if you decided one day you didn't like metallic red, you could with very little trouble change it to metal flake blue, opaque purple, transparent yellow or whatever for about $10-$15. You can even layer the stuff to create different designs. You'd probably want to have some sort of plastic cover on the back of the guitar to gather all the edges under, but that's no biggie.

I think I'm set on the chalk board for now, but if it doesn't work out or I decided to ditch it, that idea is going in the file for later use.

Got some sanding done on it tonight.  It has a blue finish, but, upon getting through that, it had a three tone burst underneath.  I've heard of that before, but never seen it.  The wood is unspectacular in every way it could conceivably be.

I use chalk board paint on the inside of Fender cabinets to recreate that blackface/silverface era crap finish... it smudges up really well!~
