I've had a couple sections of a tree stump sitting in my garage for over ten years now. I've forgotten the details about it other than my dad planted the tree years ago. I've even forgotten why I kept them (I had plans for them at some point I'm sure).

Recently I got a wild hair and now think they're going to become my next guitar(s). they aren't long enough to make a full size body out of, but I've been thinking about a small scale guitar for a while now so that'll be my first attempt. Perhaps an electric uke and/or mandolin after that?

Anyway... I'd like to know what kind of wood this is. I'm guessing ash but I have no memory of my dad ever planting an ash tree. It grew in Minnesota BTW.

I'll let it sit around for a month or two before I do anything else with it, just in case it splits or whatever. I'm pretty sure it's about as dry as it's going to get already, and it's more or less quarter sawn so I don't expect issues but I know basically nothing about this stuff, so... who knows.

So... Ash?

Actually, elm would make a lot more sense than ash. I don't remember any ash trees but there were elms all over. Right up until Dutch Elm disease took over that is...

I wonder how elm would work for a tiny tele body?

Dunno. You never see 'em. Must be a reason. Maybe it's too unstable or something. Actually, I can't think of anything that's made of elm, other than stump stools on porches and decks.
