Neck mounting holes

Just got my 7string from warmoth, and have noticed the neck has only one mounting hole, right in the middle! I'm pissed off. Or is this done on purpose?

I don't want to have to send it back over the atlantic and wait another 2 months to be honest.  ???

Other than this, it's fantastically made!

i think that warmoth can omit the neck holes, but there is like $15 upcharge for it.
thats really wierd.

if you want to do it yourself, all you need is a drill and some screws.

take a look at this website:
http://www.exit45.com/VaxIV

at a little shy of halfway down the page, he drills the neck holes by placing screws in the neck and pressing it into the body to make indents exactly where the holes should be.

Thanks for that, but its the holes in the neck that are missing, the ones in the body are as normal! Could i just poke screws through the body into the neck and drill into that? Or is there a big risk of making the neck weaker etc.?

God damn you warmoth

that hole in the middle is very common on bodies (its there so that it can be hung up), but on a neck? whats the deal with that?

do you have any pictures?

since your body is normal, i think that all you need to do is just put the neck in place and screw down the neck screws until you have a decent mark on the wood, then drill it.
pretty much the same thing as in that link, but the other way around.

The web pages for all three Warmoth 7-string necks cite "pre-drilled mounting holes", so they made a mistake. I would contact them and see what they say. It's not a really hard job, but it HAS TO BE PRECISE - if you're not comfortable doing it, it needs to be done by someone who is. We don't know where you are, except across the Big Pond - is it a city? Any machinist or woodworker with an eye for detail can do it, as well as a guitar shop with an experienced guy.... It also can be done early or late in the process, so if you have finishing and wiring you can still get started (pending what Warmoth says....) Personally it'd take me one minute of drilling, after two hours of measuring & remeasuring and worrying about it  - and measuring some more. :laughing7:

I've drilled neck holes before - back in the day when warmoth did not offer such a service.
I used the "put the neck in the neck pocket, and push the screws through so they make a mark, then drill the neck on the drill press" method with great success.  BTW, I'm not a machinist or a pro guitar builder - just a guy who plays guitars; any competent person can do this task.

welcome to the "ooops Warmoth forgot to complete my neck" club.  :laughing3:

Ouch!!!

Seriously, contact sales and see what your options are before making holes.  Let's make sure all options are considered.

Unfortunately, I live in a rural area, and even getting hold of a squier strat or some other common model is a difficult task. Let alone finding an accomplished luthier.
I am seriously annoyed about all this, it seems such a ridiculous mistake! Ill get in touch with them, but i have a feeling not much can be done, seeing as my greedy government wouldnt let this stuff into the country without me giving them £90 first. And i've heard what their customer service can be like...... I am not willing to pay out more when i could possibly fix it myself.

Its such a beautiful body as well, so smooth! Everything fits perfectly! Just this ridiculous mistake......

Thanks for your suggestions!!
Hope you all have more luck with your builds.....

and to think that many here would instead be cheering that we didn't have to pay and additional $15 for a no pre-drilled holes neck

fwiw, when I order a W neck I pay to have the pre-drilled holes ommitted. I consider the neck you received an upgrade above what you paid for.

take off yer diapers, quit yer whining, and go build yer geetar  :icon_jokercolor:

Here's how to do it yourself.
1. Fit the neck into the pocket.
2. Clamp it on, w/ cardboard inbetween to keep it from scratching.
3. Put your 1st & last strings on w/ tuners installed.
4. Adjust the neck angle so the strings look right w/ respect to the fretboard edges.
5. Measure the depth of the hole needed & put tape on the drillbit to mark this, so you don't go too far. 1/8" dia.drillbit should work.
6. Using the body holes as a guide, drill through the body holes into the neck.

You can do it. It's not too hard. Good luck!  -  Jim

Just can't understand why people go directly to a low level talking instead of talk with the guys and try to solve the problem... If they made a mistake and don't care about, ok then you should be shouting at them  :dontknow:

I think it's nice coming here ask, but why swear on? C'mon, give me a break, I'm the 3rd world's uncultured guy here and don't to it unless the store/builder I bought the thing cares nothing for the problem... The problem is, many guys enter here and if it's not exactly what they wished is "this f******* crap service, stupid, blablabla"
