No kidding. That's why I got out of it. I crashed a number of planes before I learned how to fly, did many repairs/upgrades on the cars, and went through lots of sets of rotors for the helicopter before I decided it had just gotten too far out of hand. Still... glad I did it. Lotsa fun, met a lot of interesting people, saw a lot of interesting things.
 
One of my roomies is learning the fine art of crashing RC planes. Luckily, they have gotten affordable now. He's into the foam, battery-powered, planes.

I never got the RC itch. Knew it was more than I can afford. I did get back into the 1/25th scale car kits around the turn of the last century. I still have more kits than I'll be able to build in my lifetime...

There will never be a lack of things to throw your money at!
 
I have flown rc for 20+ years (well not for the past 5 when I was in Germany).  I plan to start flying again soon.  I have only had 3 major crashes with one of those being a mid air.  But yes, it can get expensive.
