I've just returned from Prague, Krakow and Auschwitz. It was horrible, awesome and strange.

I'm at the John's in Krakow, a jew starts talking to me. Undeniably a Jew. we start talking about science and Judaism. Strangely enough he knows my university, I know his, and we exchange stories.

I'm in a bar in Prague, drinking absinthe (my new love) and I meet some Americans, play some along.

So strange to meet up people across the globe with common interests.

Absinthe is the best drink ever. :icon_thumright:

What kind do you like? I'm considering buying a Pontarlier glass and spoon, and a bottle of Pernod.

I like the 70% version, no sugar, no water, just straight up. I like the pure Tsjech version. it's as green as pisang ambon (or grass, if you don't have pisang ambon in the USA :P ) and it's super-anice-y. I love it. Pernod is nice too, but not potent enough. besides, the shock you get from people when you say 'I drink absinth straight up' is just phenomenal.

I had tried Pernod straight up. I haven't had it louched yet, which is why I'm curious. It has an amazing flavor to it straight up, but the problem is, I'm not about to pour myself a glass of something that is 68% alcohol. I had an ounce, and that is about as much as I'd feel comfortable drinking in one sitting.  :blob7:

I love this forum, we can talk about anything, and right now, it's absinthe.

I had it once, with the drip drip machine over a sugar cube, I wish I had had more, But I do remember a warm relaxed feeling come over me, it probably fixed my high blood pressure for about 3 days. Magical stuff.

Made me rather clear headed. Almost like a mild energy boost. Is that normal?

Anyways, I'm looking at Pontarlier style glasses on Amazon and ebay. One of Amazon's has poor reviews for shattering easily while washing, so that has me cautious about ending up with the same thing from other dealers.
I don't care to spend more than $20 on a glass, though, because I'm a cheapass sometimes.

oh you're talking about the pernod absinth! I see! that's nice stuff, but not for the purist. it's not the 'distilled' version, but infused, or something like that.

I just love the taste. I don't get drunk from absinth, nor hammered in any kind of way. I don't do the sugar cube or drip drip machine-thing. just straight up.

I work in a winery and my boss thinks I'm nuts for doing it that way. but ey, I just luv it that way, haha.

It's so cool to set it on fire when you're going out in a club or something. the blue flames over the green liquid. girls go nuts.

So what should I try?

:icon_scratch: .....................................    :dontknow:

1 ... the shrub wormwood, an essence made from this.

2 ... a potent green aniseed-flavored liqueur that turns milky when water is added.
Prepared from wormwood, it is now largely BANNED because of its TOXICITY.

Sounds Yummie to me  :icon_biggrin:

Not all absinthes have wormwood in them.

It seems that all the good things in life are bad for you, anyway. :icon_jokercolor:

Try Rodnik's absinthe. is like 25 euro's (30$?) an is extremely nice stuff.

@updown: sorry, but have you even bothered to find some information about this spirit? Because, about the so-called hallucogenic properties of absinth; that's hogwash. just read up about it. The wormwood isn't t potent, the ban has been largely lifted across the globe (for instance, it was er made illegal in Spain and portugal). it turns milky white because of some ingredients that don't go well with water, just as any other pastis like pernod, ricard or ouzo.

it was banned because of fear. People were afraid and legislation didn't care to do some ferther investigation regarding the stuff. Which is quite a shame, because the levels of thujone (the stuff that presumebly made people go nuts) are just too low, even in the 'vintage' absinth, to make one go crazy! The levels have to be up to 25 times higher, (i.e.: half a liter drunk at once!!!!) before one goes mental.

So, no. it's just a strong spirit with an aniseed flavor to it.

and yes, all absinth that wants to be a real absinth has to have wormwood in it. It's a key ingredient for the flavor ;) Thats why one has to search for a good one, haha. Like Rodnik's. It's distilled and contains wormwood.

Yeah Ok your right, Sorry, I should do more researching.
But ….
I don't drink much these days (not the strong stuff) because I lost an Auntie from Alcohol poisoning.
She was worse than a Junkie, she even stole from us too.
Seen to many mates / work friends go off the handle due to excessive Alcohol.
Especially after a Divorce or break-up.

I just must be getting old.  :dontknow:

@updown: i understand. I have to admit, I know the feeling. I feel so much like hammering away a bottle of scotch each night. I don't do it, though, because I love music so much and I want to hear the new album by the Darkness. I have waited almost 7 years if I recall correctly (i.e.: a lot!) and to kill myself by drinking too much would just be folly.

You're not supposed to "get hammered" on fine liqueurs and spirits and such. You enjoy it in moderation. If you want to wake up pantless, making out with a shoe, that's what tequila is for.

The two bottles I'm sitting on...  :occasion14:

Bought my Pontarlier glass and Kubler spoon; still looking around for a local store that sells sugar cubes, lest I have to eBay them.

I was given a bottle of 100 Proof Le Tourment Vert this afternoon. As I understand, it's not "real" Absinthe because it's artificially colored and has weird ingredients and such, but I'll try it.

You're going to have to get sugar cubes on ebay?! They have them at the redneck Walmart here, I can't believe you can't find them, that sucks. What do people put their acid on where you live?  :icon_tongue:
