It's kind of funny. I've never wanted to emulate Paul Gilbert. But I have a ton of respect for the guy, and his enthusiasm is just incredible, and he seems to not take himself too seriously. I sort of 'rediscovered' Mr Big after seeing them do "Smoke On the Water"  with everyone playing everyone else instruments (Paul Gilbert on drums). Then I found this:

He not only shreds, has a great sense of humor, but he's actually singing lead while doing this stuff.

Yes, he has a problem with his hearing. They are to block off stage volume and give him a focussed mix.
 
I've seen later video clips with him, where it looks like he's wearing very discreet hearing aid kit(s).
