Well, you have to admit it's an enterprising way to finance the tour.  Sure can't make that selling CDs.

While I do believe that stealing and dishonesty is a bad thing, I don't feel too bad hearing that its pawn shops that got screwed.  They sort of have it coming.

The thing that has always bothered me about pawn shops is that if you get robbed, and your belongings end up at a pawn shop, in most cases you have to buy them back from the pawn shop.  Whereas if your belongings end up in the hands of a regular person you have a much better claim to get them back for free (and depending on circumstances that person may also face criminal prosecution).

Of course I feel sorry for anyone who bought one of these fake guitars from the pawn shop.

Actually if you can prove the item was stolen from you, then the pawn shop has to return it free of charge.

However it does seem that pawn shops do some shady deals. I have never seen anything in a pawn shop selling for cheap, and they do not give much for an item. The profit margin is high.

Of course laws in each state vary, but it is surprisingly difficult to recover stolen items from a pawn shop.  There are laws protecting the rightful owner, but also laws protecting the pawn broker.  It often requires the rightful owner to sue the pawn broker to recoup the cost of recovering the item.  If the rightful owner can prove ownership, and has a police report detailing the theft, the best option may be to purchase the item back at the price the pawn broker paid to the thief.  The rightful owner then may be able to sue the pawn broker to recoup this cost, but after legal fees and time wasted, many people just opt to purchase the items back at the discounted rate and be done with it.

I do understand that pawn shops provide a legitimate service for people who may have no other way of raising quick cash, but it is also a service that is ripe for abuse by thieves.

In any case, interesting scam these guys pulled.  It brings to mind the age old wisdom of caveat emptor.
